Not registered for GST/HST? You still owe CRA.
This is one of the most common β and most expensive β surprises for new business owners in Canada. Three things CRA expects from you that nobody explains upfront:
Income tax and sales tax are not the same obligation β one doesn't replace the other
Once your revenue hits $30,000 β not profit, revenue β you must register for GST/HST and start collecting from customers. Miss it and CRA still comes for the money. With interest. From you, not your customers.
The moment you pay yourself or anyone a salary, your corporation is an employer. Source deductions are due by the 15th of every month. Late by a day costs 3%. More than a week β 10%.
Save this. Share it with any business owner who's just starting out.
The rules exist whether someone told you or not.
