FAQ: I owe $45,000. Where do I start?

Start with the whole picture: what you owe, the interest rates, your income and what remains after essential expenses. The balance alone doesn’t tell you which option fits.

CFFC can help you understand the debt options worth discussing and how they relate to your budget.

Message CFFC with START for a no-obligation conversation.

A consumer proposal involves several different roles—and understanding them matters.

You provide complete financial information. A Licensed Insolvency Trustee assesses the formal insolvency options and files/administers a consumer proposal. Creditors then review and vote on the proposal terms.

Acceptance is never guaranteed, and a consumer proposal is not the right answer for every situation.

Save this guide, or message CFFC with PROPOSAL if you want help preparing the right questions before speaking with a Licensed Insolvency Trustee.

Creditors have 45 days after filing to accept or reject the proposal. A creditors’ meeting may be called; if no meeting is requested within that period, creditors are deemed to have accepted it. Creditor acceptance is separate from court approval. Acceptance is never guaranteed.

A payment can look “up to date” while the overall debt problem gets worse.

If one card, line of credit or loan is now covering another payment, check two things: is the total balance actually falling, and is there enough monthly cash flow after essentials?

Before adding another debt, compare the available options and the total cost.

Marriage does not automatically make one person responsible for every debt in the other person’s name.

The details matter: joint accounts, co-signed borrowing, shared assets and provincial rules can all affect the answer. That is why broad statements like “your spouse will inherit your debt” are often misleading.

If this question is affecting a decision in your household, get the facts before moving money or signing anything. Message CFFC with MYTH for a no-obligation conversation about the questions to raise.

What happens in a first conversation with CFFC?

We listen to what's becoming difficult, discuss possible debt options and make room for your questions. You decide whether a next step makes sense for you. There's no obligation to proceed.

CFFC is not a Licensed Insolvency Trustee. Only a Licensed Insolvency Trustee can administer a consumer proposal or bankruptcy. No outcome is guaranteed.

Start with a message to CFFC. Please don't send account numbers or identification.

Paid $150. Balance down $50. How?

This illustrative month starts at $5,000. Add $100 in interest and subtract a $150 payment: the ending balance is $4,950. That assumes no new purchases, fees or other adjustments. All amounts are illustrative Canadian dollars.

Your figures will differ. The $150 is an example payment, not a required minimum. Check your interest charge, the minimum payment due and any minimum-payment repayment estimate on your statement. Paying only the minimum generally takes longer and costs more interest than paying more.

Having debt doesn’t mean you’re out of options.

The right solution depends on your situation. Debt relief, a consumer proposal, or another financial strategy may help create a more manageable path forward.

The first step is understanding what fits you best.

Small financial steps can lead to meaningful change over time.

You don’t have to fix everything in one day. Start by understanding where you stand, what options are available, and what step makes the most sense next.
