The most significant drop was observed in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, where prices have fallen by 9.7% since June 2023, now reaching a new benchmark of $802,900. Today, The Bank of Canada announced it will keep the overnight rate at 5%, maintaining the Bank Rate and deposit rate at 5¼%. The bank continues its quantitative tightening strategy amidst a global economic slowdown and easing inflation. The US anticipates a slowdown in 2024, while the euro area contracts mildly, and China faces constraints due to low consumer confidence. Oil prices are $10 per barrel lower than expected.

The Bank predicts global GDP growth of 2½% in 2024 and 2¾% in 2025, leading to a gradual decrease in inflation rates. In Canada, the economy stalled since mid-2023, with growth expected near zero in Q1 2024. Consumer spending has declined due to higher prices and interest rates, impacting business investment. The labour market has eased, with wages rising 4% to 5%.

Canada's economic growth is expected to strengthen around mid-2024, with GDP forecasted at 0.8% in 2024 and 2.4% in 2025. CPI inflation ended at 3.4%, driven by shelter costs. Inflation is expected to remain close to 3% in H1 2024, gradually easing to the 2% target in 2025.

Given the outlook, the Governing Council will maintain the policy rate at 5%, continuing to normalize the Bank's balance sheet. Concerns persist about risks to the inflation outlook, and the Bank is committed to restoring price stability for Canadians. The next update is scheduled for March 6, 2024, with the full economic outlook on April 10, 2024.
