When Agamdeep, Sydney, and Oluwafayotomi, students of David Suzuki Secondary School_Official applied to the 2025 Press Start CoLab High School Program, they had an idea: create a welcoming experience to help Grade 8 students navigate the transition to high school while exploring mental health, digital isolation, connection, and belonging.
Their idea was awarded a $4,000 Press Start CoLab High School Program grant and they turned that funding into something much bigger.
The Art-Bridge Project brought together students and staff across Arts, Science, Guidance, and SHSM Hospitality, along with school leadership and three feeder schools. The two-day initiative reached 200+ Grade 8 students and 50 student leaders, creating opportunities for workshops, performances, visual art, hospitality activities, and meaningful connections between future students and their high school community.
What started as a student proposal became a community-wide initiative, giving these young leaders the opportunity to identify a need, advocate for their idea, secure funding, collaborate across their school, and create something with a real impact.
