Something a lot of guys don't know: Environment Canada mandated (about 15 years ago) that municipalities using 500+ metric tons of salt a year need a formal plan to reduce it — including alternatives like liquid. Already here, and getting more relevant every year.

Our sugar beet liquid has zero added chloride compared to calcium or mag chloride blends. Not a talking point — just what this industry already has to deal with.

Thinking about getting into liquid de-icing? I'll never tell you to throw out your salt spreader tomorrow. What I recommend: pick your cleanest, most visible account, put one truck on one site, and start there.

A good pilot account is someone who'll actually pay attention to it. That's how you build confidence — not converting your whole fleet overnight, but proving it to yourself on the job.

15 years ago, Oakville and Burlington ran a trial with us — salt brine vs. our sugar beet blend, with Waterloo University doing the study. Results: 25% more melt, 25% less product, 25% less corrosion, half the volume. They still didn't switch — said it was too expensive.

A couple months ago, their new director told me the mandate's going greener and he wants to revisit it. Sometimes it just takes the right person walking through the door.

Property managers don't always care about the chemistry. What they care about is getting sued over a slip and fall. They also care about corrosion to their infrastructure and janitorial costs. That's what actually gets them to change how they handle winter — more than any environmental angle.

A consistent liquid program means a consistently treated surface. That means fewer claims, a cleaner site, less corrosion, and lower janitorial costs. That's the real pitch: liability, corrosion, janitorial costs.

unicipalities and contractors are two completely different animals. Municipalities were the first into liquid — I started with them 25 years ago. They've got their own depots, their own crews, they apply the product themselves, and by now they largely train themselves too.
Contractors, on the other hand, are the fastest-growing side adopting our liquid de-icers over the last five years. They range from guys running 50 trucks down to someone who just bought his first sprayer and doesn't even own a salt truck yet.

That guy — one truck, no yard, nowhere to store product — that's exactly the gap our filling stations were built to close. Different world, different problem, same solution.
