New Resident Drivers in Ontario

If you are new to Ontario – welcome! This is a great province to learn, grow, and build your life. You may be wondering what will happen with your driver’s license. Depending on where you come from, the province handles it differently.
Your out-of-province or foreign driver’s license will only be valid for 60 days when you arrive. After that, you are legally required to obtain an Ontario driver’s license from the MTO.
If moving from within Canada, you’ll be able to exchange your license for a full G license if you have 2+ years of full license experience. If you have fewer years’ experience, you may have to go to a G2 license or G1 and go through graduated licensing tests.
Coming from another country can result in a few different options.
1. Ontario has a license exchange agreement with some countries with similar licensing process and road laws.
2. If you’re from a country outside of that agreement, you’ll have to provide official confirmation of your license from your government. It must be dated, written on official letterhead in English or French.
3. Your years of driving experience will also dictate what type of license you will get. You may have to go through the graduated license system before obtaining your full license.

No matter what the situation is, you’ll need to get insurance to drive a car in Ontario.

Auto Thefts On The Rise

Did you know that Ontario has been hit the hardest nationally as auto theft rose 15% in 2017? Toronto specifically spiked 30% in auto thefts. Those stats can be kind of intimidating, but there are some ways you can prevent auto theft!

If you have a garage, use it for your vehicle! Or, park in a well lit area, especially if it is within view of a security camera.

Thieves can actually intercept the signal of wireless key entry technology, allowing them to unlock you vehicle right from your driveway. To prevent this, keep your key fob on the upper level of your home, or in your bedroom.

Congratulations on your license! It can be a ticket to freedom, but also comes with a great deal of responsibility. Before you start driving a car, inform your insurance company! The owner of the car you are driving needs to tell their broker that you will also be driving the vehicle and make changes to their insurance coverage accordingly.
