Sixteen years ago, just after the chaos of the 2008 Market Bubble, news agencies began to report on one of the greatest-gift-gone wrong stories of all time. A woman in her mid 40s, identified only as Anat, decided to surprise her mother with a new mattress. Apparently, her mother often complained about her poor sleep on her aging, and lumpy mattress. So, in a gesture of daughterly goodwill, Anat bought a new, much comfier mattress for her mom. Both Joan and I skipped all the way home with big smiles on our faces the day we finally implemented her plan. It remains to this day the most fun I’ve ever had at work, and it is a great example to all of us that we are capable of making a significant philanthropic impact at a much higher level than we might expect.

The challenge with AI large-language models (ie, ChatGPT, etc) is that they have been trained on a trove of data from the internet…and the internet is not exactly always filled with accurate information. Additionally, there are many things which can be relevant to your situation that the AI overlooks, or doesn’t know about that can radically transform what is an appropriate course of action.

For me, the part of Keith’s legacy I hold the most dear is some of his smallest, quietist actions. Over our decade-and-a-half working together, Keith sent little “out of the blue” thoughtful things to myself and Sarah. Behind me as I type sits a small plaque with the words “We do what we do because souls need to be touched”. Another in Sarah’s office says “That’s why we’re here – to make a dent in the universe”. They are two of my favourite gifts from Keith, and I can’t think of another person who has touched our souls so much, or made such a big dent in our part of the universe.

I miss you buddy.

In Canada, a charity is forbidden from flowing donations to directly supporting individuals for any reason. In Canada, there is no way to donate and get a tax receipt if your donation is going to the benefit of an individual. Charities can provide support to communities of individuals. An easy example to demonstrate this is food banks providing groceries for low-income families.
