Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) have been available to Canadians for more than half a century and for many people they are the backbone of a retirement savings strategy.

Being able to contribute the maximum annual contribution is often regarded as the very definition of retirement saving success.

But there are a lot more considerations that investors should be aware of beyond the basics of this very powerful tool!

Join me next Thursday at 12pm Eastern time while we spend roughly 45 minutes exploring other lesser-known considerations and strategies that can be implemented with an RRSP!

When we think about saving for our retirement, we likely draw the association to contributing to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) either personally, or as part of an employment package.

RRSPs are clearly seen as the backbone of most retirement strategies and are a great tool to allow individuals to save for retirement in a tax-preferred way by:

1. When you make a contribution to an RRSP, that amount creates an income deduction which can be used to reduce the amount of income on which income taxes are calculated.
2. While the funds are invested in the RRSP, there is tax-deferred growth on all returns until the funds are withdrawn from the RRSP.

But beyond the basics, there are many other planning considerations that professionals can explore to improve their financial picture by using a RRSP.

Looking to learn more? Join the on March 31st at 12pm eastern for a webinar I will be running on RRSPs Beyond the Basics!

As we exit the month where many reading this may have just made their last minute RRSP contributions for last year, I felt it was time to take a dive into some considerations around RRSPs beyond just the deduction you would have earned.

That is why this month for my webinar on the 31st at 12pm eastern I will be speaking on RRSPs, Beyond the basics.

Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) have been available to Canadians for more than half a century and for many people they are the backbone of a retirement savings strategy.

Being able to contribute the maximum annual contribution is often regarded as the very definition of retirement saving success.

But there’s a lot more investors should be aware of beyond the basics.

Investors may think it's straightforward, but there's a lot more to RRSPs than meets the eye.

From spousal contributions to creditor issues to OAS/CPP impacts, things can quickly become complex.....

This presentation will provide a quick review of RRSP fundamentals and eight of the lesser-known facts of the investment vehicle.

With the RRSP deadline quickly approaching (March 1st), now is the time where many of us are starting to look at our tax picture from last year.

We may be particularly eager to get things in order quickly if we are expecting a refund.

And though this may feel like a windfall is on the horizon, the term "refund" is important because that's exactly what it is.

The amount you receive back from the government represents the amount of taxes you overpaid from your income last year.

So what are some financial goals you had last year that you didn't have the cash flow to support?

It may be time to look to those goals when thinking about what to do with your refund.

Looking for a few ideas to get the wheels spinning?

- Pay down some debt (Especially high interest consumer debt)
- Top up, or start an emergency fund
- Maximize RESP contributions
- Contribute to your long term investments
- Upgrade your income earning skills

What do you plan to do with your refund?

Are you a Canadian who crosses the border for work every day?

Chances are your employer provides a comprehensive benefits package that could include long-term disability insurance.

I was meeting with a client who was depending on that coverage in the case they become disabled and had never considered that the policy may not have paid out to him as a Canadian.

What they didn't realize is the continued payments of that disability insurance depend on their continued "residence" in the united states.

For a Canadian... That's a real problem.

If this might be you, it may be time to look at the benefits package you were provided or seek out some professional advice.

Are you crossing the border for work? Is this something you looked into?
