In less than 6 hours the Bank of Canada will once again cut rates. This will most likely be a .25 rate cut although there are low odds of a .50 rate cut. 2024 is the year of the cuts and tomorrow will not disappoint.

This morning the Bank of Canada held the interest rate steady at 5%. This pause was largely expected by the market. Although, I guess the letters written to the Bank of Canada by the premiers of BC, Ontario and Newfoundland to pause interest rates really worked. 🤣

Despite the hold, the Bank said it “remains concerned about persistent underlying inflationary pressures and that it is still prepared to increase interest rates again if required.

The pause will help keep costs level for now. This is only the third pause in the last 13 rate announcements since March of 2022.

The Canada 5 year bond yield has been increasing the last couple weeks.
Earlier this month the bond yield was at 2.87%, as of yesterday it was 3.58%.
Since fixed rates are tied to the Canadian 5 year bond yield, fixed mortgage rates are creeping up around the 5% mark again.
Right now is a good time for short term fixed rates.

The Bank of Canada kept the status quo. Seeing the GDP moved into negative territory during Q2 at -1.2%, it was not surprising to see the Bank of Canada stay the course.

The Bank of Canada is still committed to keeping Canadian interest rates low for the foreseeable future.
