A little preparation can be an act of care for your home, your belongings and the people you share them with.

Flood prevention may not be the most exciting item on a weekend to-do list, but a few simple steps today can help make a stressful situation easier to manage later.

Show your basement a little extra love by:

• Raising appliances, electronics and valuables off the floor
• Storing important belongings in sealed plastic bins instead of cardboard boxes
• Choosing water-resistant materials for cabinets, flooring and finishes
• Installing leak detectors and maintaining your sump pump, ideally with a battery backup
• Sealing cracks in walls, floors and around windows
• Making sure water drains away from your foundation through gutters and proper grading
• Reviewing what your insurance policy covers, and what it does not
• Creating an emergency plan and documenting important belongings

You cannot control the weather. But taking care of the little things now can help protect the people, spaces and memories that matter most later.

Heading out for a long weekend on the water? Even if you’re a seasoned navigator, safety should always be part of the plan.

Before you cast off, take a few minutes to make sure your boat and everyone on board are ready for the day ahead:

✔️ Check the weather and water conditions, and avoid strong currents or areas you may not be able to navigate safely
✔️ Dress for the weather and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated
✔️ Make sure properly fitted life jackets are available for everyone on board (including your pup!)
✔️ Pack essential safety equipment
