Keep Sidewalks Safe

"πŸ‘β„οΈ Winter Home Tips with Kevin Fancy from The BIG Insurance Brokerage! β„οΈπŸ‘ As the snow blankets our neighborhoods, join me for a discussion on winter home care. We'll explore strategies for managing snow and ice around your property, the importance of keeping those sidewalks clear, and how your home insurance can provide peace of mind in unpredictable weather. Let's navigate winter together! Check out Kevin's expertise at www.thebig.ca/kevin-fancy.

Be neighbourly and keep your sidewalks safe this winter, it could save you from a fine or lawsuit! As a homeowner, making snowy and icy sidewalks safe for the public should always be a priority. This is important to prevent anyone from injuring themselves in a fall. It is best to shovel snow soon after it has fallen, and covering the sidewalks in salt before ice starts to form. Municipalities have different rules and regulations for the clearing of snow and ice, but homeowners should be aware that they can be liable should an injury occur on or in front of their property.

Snow Plow Safety Tips

The snowy weather is just around the corner, and so could a snow plow, salt or sand truck. Take a moment to review some of these snow plow safety tips to ensure you are staying safe on the roads. Be sure to share these tips with your friends and family!

Allow snow plows at least 10 car lengths in front of you. This will help you avoid collisions caused by poor visibility or flying debris that may damage your car.

For your own safety, NEVER pass a snow plow on the right. Only pass snow plows on the left IF they pull to the side allowing you to do so.
Be patient and slow down – snow removal vehicles move slower than regular traffic because they are bearing the brunt of the snow and ice on the road.

It may be frustrating to get stuck behind a plow, but remember they are making the roads safe for everyone.

Auto Thefts On The Rise

Did you know that Ontario has been hit the hardest nationally as auto theft rose 15% in 2017? Toronto specifically spiked 30% in auto thefts. Those stats can be kind of intimidating, but there are some ways you can prevent auto theft!

If you have a garage, use it for your vehicle! Or, park in a well lit area, especially if it is within view of a security camera.

Thieves can actually intercept the signal of wireless key entry technology, allowing them to unlock you vehicle right from your driveway. To prevent this, keep your key fob on the upper level of your home, or in your bedroom.

There are more ways to prevent theft, just ask for some advice from one of our brokers! We can also take a look at your insurance policy to see if you have the right coverage and possibly give you a better quote.

Before you hit the road this winter, remember these essential tips to stay safe and prepared:

Know Your Vehicle:
Familiarize yourself with your vehicle's key components like windshield wipers, headlights, and antifreeze levels. A quick check before hitting the road can save you from headaches later.

Be Prepared:

Icy roads? Who’s at fault?

Driving in wintry conditions can be hazardous, no matter how slow you may be driving. If your car slides on an icy road and hits a stationary object or vehicle, the general rule is that the person who is in control of the moving vehicle is the one at fault if they hit a stationary object or other car.

If this happens to you and the damage is minimal, it may be best to pay for the repairs yourself rather than make an insurance claim for two reasons:

1. You would have to pay your collision deductible is you were at-fault.
2. An at-fault collision on your driving record could cause your premium to increase.

If you estimate the damage is bad and would cost more than your deductible, you can call our 24/7 claims line any time to make a claim at 1-866-670-0905.

Follow these tips to avoid a collision and drive safely in icy and snowy road conditions:

🌨️ Install winter tires to give you better traction in slippery conditions.
🌨️ Ensure clear visibility; remove all ice and snow from sight lines on your vehicle.
🌨️ Stay calm in slippery conditions and never slam on your brakes. Instead pump on the brakes or rely on your vehicles anti-lock braking system (ABS).
🌨️ Keep a safe distance from vehicles around you and drive slowly.
🌨️ See and be seen by turning your lights on and regularly checking mirrors and blind spots.
🌨️ Stay on main roads and avoid driving in very bad road conditions if you can.

Maintenance Tips for Electric Vehicles

Do you own an electric vehicle? Let us know in the comments below!

πŸ”ŒElectric vehicles have different parts and mechanics than an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) car, which can affect how you perform regular maintenance. Let’s talk about some of the things that you should do for regular maintenance on electric vehicles.

πŸ”Œ Check the Battery. Usually electric car batteries have a warranty of 8 years, but they can last much longer, sometimes as much as 15 years! When a battery needs replacing (which can cost thousands of dollars), you can either return your car to the dealership or pay to replace the battery.

πŸ”Œ Update Software. Whether during a scheduled maintenance appointment, or online, software updates will ensure that your electric vehicle runs smoothly and protects you from security issues.

πŸ”Œ Brake Maintenance. Electric vehicles use a regenerative braking system which has less wear and tear on the brake pads and rotors.

πŸ”Œ Tire Check. Electric vehicles are 20-30% heavier than ICE cars, and so can cause more wear and tear on the tread. Have your tires aligned and rotate your tires to avoid uneven wearing.

πŸ”Œ Top-Up Fluids. Check and replace coolant to prevent battery overheating. You may find brake fluid may need to be replaced less often because the regenerative braking system causes less degradation of the fluid.

πŸ”Œ The positive side (pun intended) of an electric car is that you no longer have to worry about fuel, the muffler, spark plugs and wires, motor oils, transmission fluid and radiator fluid.
Check in with your insurance broker. Always make sure that you have the right coverage and a deductible that you are comfortable with.
