Bank of Canada Cuts Key Interest Rate to 4.75%

After more than two years of rising interest rates, the Bank of Canada has finally provided some relief by lowering its policy interest rate by 25 basis points to 4.75%. This move marks the end of a prolonged tightening cycle and hints at potential further rate cuts.

For homeowners with variable-rate mortgages and HELOCs, this translates to immediate savings. For every 25-basis-point reduction, expect to save about $15 per $100,000 of mortgage.

While this cut is small, it is significant. It indicates a shift in the central bank's strategy to curb inflation, which dropped to 2.7% in April.

The impact on fixed-rate mortgages remains uncertain, as they are tied to the five-year bond yield. Market expectations suggest further adjustments may be influenced by U.S. Federal Reserve actions.

This rate cut is expected to rejuvenate the housing market. A recent Royal LePage survey found that many Canadians are now ready to re-enter the market, potentially increasing sales volume and putting upward pressure on home prices.
