This community initiated project is now hosted by the non-profit environmental group, Green Venture. The free exchange of seeds among farmers, based on cooperation and reciprocity, has historically been the basis for maintaining biodiversity as well as food security. The Hamilton Seed Library hopes to continue this practice in the urban environment, serving as a public resource in an effort to bui
ld stronger, more self-reliant communities by lending out a variety of seeds. We believe communities have the ability and right to shape their own food systems and that public seed libraries are a tool to help achieve food sovereignty in our neighbourhoods. We currently operate two branches - one at Green Venture's EcoHouse in the east end, and one at the Westdale branch of the Hamilton Public Library. HOW IT WORKS:
COST - The Hamilton Seed Library is a free public resource. There is no cost to borrow seeds. MEMBERSHIP - There is no official membership or library card required. CHECK OUT LIMITS - There are no hard and fast limits on how many seeds you can borrow, but we make suggestions for each type of plant. RETURNS - Though we ask that all borrowers make a sincere effort to save and return seeds for the next season, nobody will ever be penalized for unsuccessful seed saving. The most important thing is to borrow seeds, start gardening, and learn as you go. DONATIONS - We greatly appreciate donations of both open-pollinated, heirloom seeds, and/or cash! (We do not accept GMO or hybrid seeds.) Please contact us if you have seeds to donate.
