"You need more debt to build a better credit score."
This is one of the biggest misconceptions I hear.
Even as a newcomer to Canada, I remember being told, "Don't pay cash for the car, finance it instead." I was also advised to accept a line of credit if the bank offered one. All just to build my credit score.
A good credit score is important. It can help you qualify for loans, access better interest rates, rent a home more easily, and get approved for certain services.
So, you should work on building a good credit score. But, you don't need to take on more debt to do it.
You can improve your credit score by:
✔️ Paying your bills on time
✔️ Keeping your credit utilization below 30%
✔️ Avoiding frequent credit applications
✔️ Keeping older accounts open, if they don't cost you anything to maintain
Yes, having different types of credit can also have a positive impact on your score, but it's only one factor. Don't take out a loan or open another credit card just to improve your credit score.
Remember, a good credit score is a tool, not the destination. Borrow because it supports your financial goals, not because you're chasing a number.
