🚨 Fraud Prevention Month 🚨

👴🏻👵🏻 GRANDPARENT SCAM

In this type of fraud, a caller pretends to be a grandchild or loved one in serious trouble. They usually claim they are stranded, have been arrested or been in an accident and urgently need money to help with fees or bail them out. They'll ask for money fast - often via wire-transfer, gift cards or cryptocurrency. They rely on panic and secrecy, but also your love, concern and instinct to help family.

You can protect yourself:
1️⃣ Verify First: Always call your grandchild or a trusted family member before sending money.
2️⃣ Red Flags: Requests for immediate money, secrecy or unusual payment methods. Legitimate organizations or law enforcement will never ask for payments using gift cards, couriers or cryptocurrency.
3️⃣ Stay Informed: Scammers will often know personal details - they're sneaky, but careful verification beats panic. Create a family "safe word", or ask personal questions only your family member would know.

Report any incidents to your credit union and local law enforcement. Remember if something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts.

👥 Peer-To-Peer Payment Scams

Peer-to-peer (P2P) payment scams are on the rise, and fraudsters are getting more creative everyday. Before sending money:
✔️ Verify who you're dealing with - TRIPLE CHECK DETAILS
✔️ Be cautious of urgent requests - NEVER RUSH
✔️ Never send money to someone you don't know or trust - DO NOT CLICK LINKS

REMEMBER: once a peer-to-peer payment is sent, it can be VERY difficult to recover.

When in doubt, pause and reach out to us. We're always here to help.

🚨 Fraud Prevention Month 🚨

March is Fraud Prevention Month - a great reminder to stay alert and protect your finances.

💻 PHISHING

Phishing is when fraudsters pretend to be a trusted organization (like your financial institution, Canada Post, or even the CRA) and send messages asking you to click a link or provide personal information. These messages often create a sense of urgency to get you to act quickly.

🔎 Tips to Protect Yourself:
- Never Share your online banking passwords or verification codes
- Be cautious of unexpected emails or texts asking you to click a link.
- Double-check the sender before responding
- When in doubt, contact your financial institution directly.

If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and reach out. Staying informed is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your money. 🔒

Such an exciting milestone 🏡

The Nova Scotia First-Time Homebuyers Program is a provincially supported pilot initiative designed to help first-time homebuyers access homeownership.
