The number one reason people give me for not having a will: "It's too expensive."
Let's talk about that.
A basic will drafted by an estate lawyer in Ontario typically costs between $300 and $600 for an individual. Online platforms like Willful can do it for well under $200 for straightforward situations.
Now compare that to dying without one β potential court applications, a longer and more complicated probate process, possible legal disputes between family members, and professional fees that can climb into the thousands. All of it falling on your family during one of the hardest times of their lives.
The will is cheaper. By a lot. The "it's expensive" reason doesn't hold up.
