Not budgeting

A household without a budget is like a ship without a rudder, drifting aimlessly and – sooner or later – it might sink or run aground in shallow waters. Small expenses can add up to big money over a period of time. It's advisable to track your expenses including the miscellaneous costs. Over time you will arrive at informed estimates that make your budget more realistic.

Frequent use of credit cards

Credit cards always seem to get picked on when discussing personal finances and often deserve the flack they get. No budget can be a common reason for using credit, contributing to an average credit card debt of over $9,000 for balance-carrying households. This invites an extra cost of double digits interest rate. Let's calculate using the rule of 72 to estimate. Assume a credit card's balance of $9000 is always forward on a monthly basis and assume the credit card's interest rate of 19%. Then we can estimate 3 yrs and 8 months for interest and principle to double up to $18,000.

Mum’s the word

No matter how much income you have, money can be a stressful topic in families. It can lead to one of two potentially harmful habits.

First, talking about family finances is often avoided. Conversations about kids and work and what movie you want to watch happen, but discussions about money can get swept under the rug. Are you a “saver” and your partner a “spender”? Is it the opposite? Maybe you’re both spenders or both savers. Talking (and listening) about yourself and your significant other can be insightful. It can help avoid conflicts about your finances. Budgeting may help keep your family on track with your goals – or help you identify new goals – or maybe set some goals if you don’t have any.

Second, financial matters can be confusing – which may cause stress – especially once you get past the basics. This may tempt you to ignore the subject or to think, “I’ll get around to it one day.” But getting a budget and a financial strategy in place sooner rather than later may help you reduce stress. Think of it as “That’s one thing off my mind now!”

Saving for an emergency is absolutely vital. If there is one thing that I have learned over time and in a brutal way, is the need to save 3 to 6 months of income just in case something happens. Job loss, medical bills, car breaking down, and refrigerator breaking are just a few examples.

Let us get together, and let me show you a few basic things you can do weekly to save for an emergency.
