🎄 Twas two weeks before Christmas... and the BoC elves worked some magic! ✨ While it wasn’t quite the Christmas miracle we imagined, we’re definitely celebrating the 50bps cut to the Overnight Rate, bringing Prime rate down to 5.45%! 🙌

Good news for anyone with a variable rate mortgage (or thinking of getting one) 🎉

But while the BoC’s messaging for further cuts was a bit more “we’ll take it one decision at a time" top economists are still predicting potentially 3 more 25bps reductions before the end of 2025. 🤩

Mark your calendars – the first rate announcement for 2025 is on January 29th! 📅Leaving enough time for December's CPI data to be released first! 🏦

The Bank of Canada (BoC) has decreased its overnight lending rate by another 25 basis points, bringing the overnight rate down to 4.50%. Which will in turn bring Prime rate down to 6.70%. 🏦 Canadians on a variable rate mortgage or HELOC will be the ones who feel this rate decrease the most 🇨🇦

Our favourite top economists are forecasting we continue to see the BoC decrease rates by 0.25% at each of the next 3 rate announcements for 2024 and continuing into 2025 where we should see the overnight rate end up at either 2.50% or 2.75%. That means by some point in 2025, we could see Prime rate over 2.50% LOWER than where we started in 2024. 📉

📉 June Inflation Update 🔍

Key highlights:
✅ Core inflation measures up slightly but less than May 📊
✅ Rent growth slowed significantly 🏠
✅Overall inflation rate dropped to 2.7% 📉

📈 Inflation Update! 📉

May inflation numbers were stronger than expected, which could cause some mainstream media negativity 😩. But don’t worry, many of these increases seem temporary. Our top economic forecasters are still expecting another rate decrease in July. 📉🏦

Health, personal care, and recreation prices jumped, but travel and food prices are unlikely to last. Rent increased, but overall shelter costs rose modestly due to lower mortgage interest rates. Core goods saw minimal price increases, with some prices even falling! 🤓📉🙌

While at first glance this data suggests we would need a possible pause in rate cuts, the June CPI data report will be released on July 16th, a little over a week ahead of the July rate announcement, so the data in that report will be crucial for the BoC’s decision-making. 🏦

It's a good day here in Canada! 🇨🇦🎉 The Bank of Canada (BoC) has just announced their first rate DECREASE of 2024. The overnight rate now sits at 4.75%, 25 basis points down from where it had sat at 5% since July, 2023 🥳

This will also bring Prime rate down to 6.95%, which will allow some Canadians who hold a variable rate mortgage or HELOC to breathe a much needed sigh of relief 🤗🏠

If most of the economic forecasts are correct 📉 this decrease will kick start a series of further rate decreases, including the next announcement scheduled for July 24th ✅ some even think we may see the overnight rate hit 4% by the end of 2024 🤞
