"What’s the matter with Your Dollar?" 💸

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to attend a professional development day at Manulife HQ to dive deep into some fantastic life insurance products. It was an incredible day of learning, but it was an unassuming marketing flyer hanging outside their basement vault that really caught my eye.

Take a close look at this ad from roughly 1924. Over a hundred years later, and we are dealing with the exact same issue: inflation.

Seeing this in person really put things into perspective. We aren't in some uniquely terrible economic era right now. Inflation was eroding purchasing power in 1924, it’s doing it today in 2026, and it will continue to be a hurdle for the next 100 years.

The real question is: how will you approach this problem? How will you protect your future from a dollar that continues to shrink in value?

That is exactly why I built Simple Route Financial; to help everyday people navigate these very real challenges.

Take the Simple Route. Send us a DM and let’s get started on protecting your future today. 📈🛡️

For many families in Northern Ontario, finding the room in a monthly budget to save for a child's education can be a challenge. However, a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) is one of the few accounts where the federal government provides a direct financial match.

In this guide, we explain:

- Account Control: The parent who opens the plan controls the investments and withdrawals, not the student.
- Grant Mechanics: How to secure the 20% match and the rules for catching up on missed contribution years.
- Change of Plans: Exactly what happens if your child decides not to pursue post-secondary education. You never lose your own contributions.
- Family Plans: How to pool contributions and grants if you have more than one child.

Understanding these mechanics is the difference between simply opening an account and actually maximizing its value.

Most banks and corporate firms won't assign you a dedicated advisor unless you have around $250,000 sitting with them. Below that, you're talking to whoever happens to be at the desk on a given day, and odds are they'll be in a different job inside a year.

That cutoff is why I started Simple Route Financial.

I work with Sudbury families building wealth on regular paycheques. Real planning matters just as much at $20,000 as it does at $2 million, and frankly the earlier you get it right, the more it compounds.

How it actually works:

No account minimums. You work with me directly, whether that's rolling over a LIRA from a past employer, reviewing seg funds you were sold years ago, or starting from zero.

For investments, I partner with ModernAdvisor. The portfolios are low-cost, globally diversified, and built on the same evidence-based research used by institutional investors. All-in fees are competitive with what the big shops charge clients many times your size.

Because I'm independent, I'm not tied to any one carrier or fund family. My recommendations are based on what fits you, not what someone upstairs needs me to push this quarter.

DM me anytime, or use the link in my bio to set up a chat.

Thinking of leaving the bank but worried about security? 🛡️

It's a common misconception that when you work with an independent advisor, you're handing your money directly to them. The truth is, independent advisors are the strategists, but the institutions are the vault.

Whether you are looking at life insurance, managed portfolios, or GICs, your money is held by the exact same major Canadian carriers and protected by the exact same federal safety nets (Assuris, CDIC, CIPF) as it would be at a big bank.

The only difference? You get an advisor who shops the entire Canadian marketplace for you, rather than being limited to one single company's menu.

Check out my latest post on the Learning Hub where I explain exactly how your money is protected when you work independently:

Thinking of leaving the bank but worried about security? Learn why independent advisors offer the same protection for your money; often with better advice.

Your pension has a silent partner: The CRA.📝

Most people forget that a workplace pension is fully taxable income. When you retire, every dollar you withdraw from that pension is taxed.

That means a significant portion of your "safety net" never actually hits your bank account.

The TFSA is where you take back control. Here is the math on contributing $500/month into a diversified TFSA (assuming a 7% avg. return*):

⏳ 10 Years: ~$86,500 📈 20 Years: ~$260,000 🚀 30 Years: ~$610,000

The difference is clear:

Work Pension: You withdraw $610k ➡️ It is treated as taxable income, potentially reducing other government benefits as well, like Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplement.

TFSA: You withdraw $610k ➡️ You keep 100% of it, tax-free with no impact to OAS and other benefits.

A pension provides stability. A TFSA provides freedom. You need both.

Stop giving the government a bigger cut than necessary. I help clients build tax-efficient retirement plans that complement their work pensions. Send me a message to get your TFSA started today.

⏰ RRSP season is here – and with it comes the pressure to "max out" your contributions.
But here's the thing: blindly maxing out RRSPs isn't always the right move. Your retirement strategy should fit YOUR life, YOUR goals, and YOUR financial situation.

As an independent advisor in Northern Ontario, I work with investment professionals to help you build a strategy that fits your life.
