1. Start by asking friends and family for referrals.
They have your best interests in mind, so will give you their honest opinion.

Check out reviews on your advisor's social media.

2. What products do they offer? Do they work for one specific company or are they able to shop the market to find you the best rates, guarantees, etc.? I elected to work for a brokerage to educate clients on all options so they can make an educated decision, rather than pushing one company’s products.

3. Too often I hear from new clients they were unhappy with their previous advisor because they sold them products and never heard from them again. Some clients touch base with me on a regular basis when they need advice or servicing. Others prefer only to be contacted if there is a specific reason. It’s important to voice your expectations to your advisor.

4. Advisors who are paid commission may have more of a vested interest in growing your investments efficiently. If your investments perform well they are paid more. If they decline they get paid less, as income is based on a percentage of assets under management.

Advisors earning a salary are paid the same base regardless of how much product they sell you. However, these advisors usually do have a set quota to reach in order to keep their salaried position.

Fee for service advisors charge a set rate up front for their advice and service. They may also charge an hourly each time you meet.

5. I show clients my own investment statements and performance because I believe showing clients I have earned great growth shows them what to expect. I like clients to know I would not do anything with their money I would not do with my own. Asking to see historical performance is a great way to gauge how your funds will be diversified and grow efficiently moving forward.
