Power cords can pose a fire risk in your house, did you know that? The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimates that electrical problems, such as faulty wiring and damaged power cords, are to blame for 16% of home fires.

If a damaged power cord is near flammable materials like curtains, bedding, or upholstered furniture, it is much easier for it to overheat and catch fire. In fact, according to the NFPA, electrical fires are thought to be behind $1.3 billion in annual property damage.

Make sure to routinely check your cords for damage like frayed wires or cracks in the casing to help prevent power cord fires in your home. Never use too many devices to fill up your outlets, and stay away from using extension cords as a permanent solution.
