What happens when you make an insurance claim? When something goes wrong at home or on the road, knowing what to do next can make an already stressful situation a little easier.

The claims process can look different depending on the type of loss and your insurance company, but generally, here’s what you can expect:

🚨 Safety first, always. Take care of any immediate safety concerns and, if it’s safe to do so, take reasonable steps to prevent further damage.

📞 Report the claim. Contact your broker or insurance company as soon as possible. Even if you’re unsure whether the damage will be covered, it’s important to report the loss promptly. Don’t wait to report a loss. Delaying a claim can lead to additional damage and could affect your coverage.

📸 Document the damage. Take photos and videos and keep receipts for emergency repairs or other expenses related to the loss.

🔎 An adjuster will assess the damage. They’ll review what happened, inspect the damage, and help determine what may be covered.

📄 Your policy is reviewed. Your insurer will look at the details of the loss and the coverage available under your policy, including applicable deductibles and limits.

💬 Ask questions. If something about the process or your coverage isn’t clear, don’t be afraid to ask. Your broker can help you understand your policy and navigate the process.

❓Did You Know❓Working from home and running a business from home aren’t necessarily the same thing when it comes to insurance. 🏠

If you work remotely for an employer, your insurance needs may look different than someone who operates their own business from home.

A home-based business can introduce additional risks, including 💻 business equipment, 📦 inventory or products, 👥 clients visiting your home, and ⚖️ business-related liability.

Your standard home insurance policy may not provide the coverage you need for these situations, which is why it’s important to let your broker know if you’re running a business from home.

🌧️ Recent heavy rainfall across Niagara has been a reminder of just how quickly water damage can happen - and how important it is to understand your insurance coverage before you need it. One of the biggest misconceptions about home insurance is that all water damage is covered the same way. In reality, different types of water damage are treated differently depending on your policy.

💧 Overland Water Coverage helps protect against water entering your home from heavy rainfall, overflowing rivers or lakes, or rapid snowmelt.

🚿 Sewer Backup Coverage helps protect against sudden and accidental water or sewage backing up through sewers, drains, sump pumps, septic systems, or connected plumbing.

🌱 Groundwater/Seepage is water that enters through your foundation or below ground level. This type of damage is typically excluded and is generally considered a maintenance issue.

A few other things to keep in mind:

🏡 If you’ve recently finished your basement or completed major renovations, be sure to let your broker know. Your policy should reflect your home’s current condition.

⏰ If you experience water damage, report your claim as soon as possible. Waiting too long can lead to additional damage, such as mould, which may not be covered.

📄 Every policy is different, so it’s important to understand what water coverages you have before a loss occurs.
