No one wants to get that letter from the CRA 😬
While audits can happen at random, there are a few things that could raise red flags and increase your chances of being selected:

🚨 Running a mostly cash-based business (like restaurants, salons, or trades)
🚨 Reporting much higher-than-average expenses in certain categories (compared to others in your industry)
🚨 Large vehicle or home office claims
🚨 Revenue reported on your GST/HST return not matching your corporate tax return
🚨 Sudden, unexplained drops in income

The good news? Staying organized, filing on time, and keeping your books clean can go a long way in keeping things smooth—even if you’re audited.

If you’re claiming vehicle expenses for your business, the CRA requires a detailed mileage log—not just an estimate.

Here’s what to include to keep your log audit-proof:

+ Date of each trip
+ Starting location + destination
+ Total kilometers driven
+ Purpose of the trip (e.g., client meeting, supply run)
+ Odometer readings (start & end of the year, at a minimum)

Keep a notebook in your car or use a mileage tracking app. If you use the QBO app, it can track your mileage for you.

Track personal and business use separately. CRA expects this breakdown when you're claiming vehicle expenses.
