Becoming an insurance broker is one of the best career moves you can make! If you’ve got a strong entrepreneurial drive and love to help others save money and find peace of mind, it might be the right choice for you. If you are interested in becoming an insurance broker in Ontario, here are some practical steps to become one:

Step 1: There are two options that ultimately prepare you for an exam. You can either take a course to prepare for the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO) licensing exam or order a prep kit through the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) as a self-study option.

Step 2: You will then write a RIBO Level 1 exam and receive a passing grade of 75% or higher.

Step 3: Once you’ve passed the exam, you must secure a position at a RIBO-registered insurance brokerage and register with RIBO for a Level 1 license.

Step 4: If you want to advance your career further, you can write a technical exam for Level 2 which allows the broker to remove the “acting under supervision” restriction from their license. Level 3 allows a broker to own their own brokerage, become a principal broker and practice without restriction.

Step 5: Continuing education is required to maintain the license. Eight hours per year are required for Level 1 licensed individuals, Level 2 and 3 require 10 hours per year.
