Don has been in the insurance business for about 3 years and joined the Riverside team this past March. Before entering the insurance industry, he worked as an Arrest Processing Officer in Calgary. In his downtime, Don enjoys hiking, camping, and being outdoors. Having grown up in southern Alberta for most of his life, he has enjoyed making Cochrane his home as of recent.

We continue to recognize Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and want to remind all of our automobile driver friends to stay vigilant on the road, and keep an eye out for motorcyclists.

Motorcyclists are more vulnerable to accidents and injuries on the road, so it's crucial to give them space and respect their presence. Here are a few tips to keep in mind…

• Check your blind spots. Motorcycles can easily get lost in your blind spots, so make sure to check your mirrors and look over your shoulder before changing lanes or turning.
• Give them space. Motorcycles need plenty of room to maneauver, so try to give them a full lane of space when passing or driving alongside them.
• Use your signals. Always use your turn signals to make sure to give motorcyclists plenty of warning when you're about to turn or change lanes.
• Assume motorcyclists are closer than they look. Use extra precautions at night or during a storm.
• Don't assume a motorcyclist is changing lanes if you see them moving. Motorcyclists often shift in their lane as they drive. Sometimes, drivers mistake their movement for a lane change. Be careful when merging next to a motorcyclist. Let them pass ahead of you before moving.

Remember, we're all sharing the road, and it's up to all of us to keep each other safe.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month!

We want to remind all motorcycle riders to stay safe on the roads. Here are some tips to help you ride with confidence…

• Wear protective gear - helmets, gloves, jackets, and boots can make a huge difference in the event of an accident.
• Follow traffic rules. Obey speed limits, use turn signals, and avoid weaving in and out of traffic.
• When in doubt, drive offensively. Err on the side of caution, and assume that most drivers don’t see you. Be prepared to brake or change lanes if needed. Of course, there’s only so much you can do, but it’s best to anticipate other drivers’ movements when possible.
• Check your bike regularly. Ensure that your motorcycle is in good working order, with proper tire pressure, brakes, and lights.
• Stay visible. Wear bright or reflective clothing, and use your headlights to increase your visibility to other drivers.

By following these tips, you can reduce your risk of accidents and enjoy the open road with peace of mind.

As we enter into wildfire season, it's crucial to fortify your home against potential hazards. Take proactive steps to be ready, minimize risks and ensure your property's safety.

• Start by creating a defensible space around your home, clearing away dry brush, and maintaining a tidy landscape. Trim trees and shrubs to prevent fire from spreading easily.
• Consider using fire-resistant materials in your home construction, renovations, and landscaping.
• Heaven forbid that a forest fire is threatening your home or community, be sure to have a go-bag packed and ready. Include a short list of any important or irreplaceable items and documents that you would want to take with you.
• Stay informed about local fire regulations and restrictions, and always prioritize safety above all else.

In accordance with the Town of Cochrane, recreational vehicles can return to residential driveways on May 1st. Please keep in mind the following safety measures when storing your unit…
• A maximum of 2 recreational units may be parked at a time
• Do not block parking spots
• No sleeping or cooking in parked units
• Keep them set back 0.6 meters from the rear property line (if there’s a rear lane)

With spring arriving (one of these day), it’s the perfect time to give your vehicle some love.

Here are some things that are worth getting checked out as we begin a new season…

Battery - Winter temperatures negatively impact batteries, and to avoid a no-start situation, make sure to check your battery's health condition.

Tires - Check them for any signs of wear and tear, and don’t forget to inflate them to the correct pressure. Proper tire maintenance not only improves fuel efficiency but also enhances traction and handling, especially on wet spring roads.

Breaking System - You can check your brake pads by visually examining them through the rim's spokes, or if you have a newer model, it might have an electronic sensor to notify you. If you are experiencing a soft brake pedal or noises while braking, be sure to bring your car in for a quick inspection.

Vehicle Fluids & Oil - Getting your fluids checked and topped off is always a good idea after each season. If you can't recall the last time you changed your oil, then make sure to check the level and prioritize to have it done.

Wiper Blades & Light Bulbs - Take a walk around your car to test out each bulb's function, which is vital to keep you safe on the road. Also, ice and snow can damage wiper blades, making spring the perfect time to get a new pair.
