October 4-10th is Fire Prevention Week, and it’s the perfect time to remind and encourage you to take these following steps to protect your home and loved ones.

🔥Test your smoke alarms monthly to ensure they are working correctly. Replace the batteries twice a year, or at least annually, and replace the entire alarm every 10 years.
🔥Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with everyone in the household at least once a year. Ensure everyone knows two ways to exit each room and has a designated meeting place outside.
🔥Never leave food cooking on the stove unattended, and turn off the burner if you leave the kitchen. Keep anything that can catch fire like oven mitts, dish towels, and curtains at least three feet away from the stove. If a grease fire starts in a pan, carefully slide a lid over the pan and turn off the heat source, leaving the lid on until the pan is completely cool.
🔥Keep portable space heaters at least three feet away from anything flammable and never leave them running unattended. Have furnaces and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually.
🔥Store matches and lighters out of reach and sight of children. Treat matches and lighters as tools, not toys, and only adults should handle them.
🔥 Keep a fire extinguisher in an accessible location, such as the kitchen. Make sure the extinguisher is rated for home use and know how to use it, as it may be needed to extinguish small fires.

With schools back in full swing, we want to remind everyone about the importance of school bus stop sign safety.

Every school day, children rely on bus drivers and fellow motorists to keep them safe as they travel to and from school.

When a school bus extends its stop sign, it’s a signal to STOP – no matter what side of the road you’re on. This gives kids time to get on or off the bus safely.

Here are a few key reminders:
🛑 STOP when the sign is out and the lights are flashing, even if you’re in a rush.
✋ Remain stopped until the bus resumes moving and the sign is retracted.
🚙 Stopping is mandatory in all lanes unless the road is divided by a median.
👀 Stay alert. Kids can be unpredictable, and they may cross the street unexpectedly.

Breaking these laws can result in hefty fines, but worse yet, it can endanger a child’s life. Let’s all do our part to keep our community’s children safe this school year.
