Not a cash grab.

There has been a lot of noise over the BC government's changes to their Property Tax Deferment Program.

The program was planned and designed to help protect people who were at risk of having to sell or lose their homes when their property tax became unaffordable. It was never intended to be a source of cheap money for other purposes.

The most common criteria to use the program is that you must first own your home and reside in it as your principal residence, and that at least one resident must be age 55 or older.

Prior to 2026, most participants were able to defer tax at prime rate or 2% below prime and have it accumulate at simple interest.

One of the most significant changes made in 2026 is that the rate that was 2% below prime will now be 2% above prime.

Currently prime rate is 4.45% so 2% over prime becomes 6.45%. That's less than the rates charged on credit cards or many credit lines, keeping this a cheap way to pay these off, and a fair rate for other purposes.

A second significant change made in 2026 is that you will be charged compound interest rather than simple interest, so your balance owing will rise more quickly.

One of the points that seems to get lost in the fuss is that the balances owing and the existing rates, at simple interest, are not affected by the changes. The changes refer to 2026 and onward.

Out of BC's population of approximately 5,700,000 approximately 87,000 are participating in this program. At least some of these will only be deprived of a source of cheap money. They will not be put at undue financial risk.

I don't like the changes, and yes, I am affected. However, for the most part, these are practical changes that allow the program to remain available.

I was reminded again of the importance of a qualified assistant, and I have the best.

Unfortunately, Nickie left on Tuesday for an extended holiday and as she wasn't here, I already missed Administrative Professionals Day on Wednesday, although Nickie wasn't here to congratulate.

We all wish Nickie a wonderful holiday but are already looking forward to her return!

Sheba, the office dog is gone.

She came to us on December 15, 2022, and left us all too early on November 28, 2025, at only 5 years old. An internal bleeding disorder that I couldn't fix.

She knew something was wrong, and had some discomfort, but there was no pain and she was playing up to the end.

My heart is broken and I couldn't write this earlier but Sheba had a lot of friends here who deserve to know what happened.

Her spirit and memory will be here for a long time.

Remembrance Day.

My father was a WWI veteran and died nearly 60 years ago, but the memories have not dimmed. He served overseas from 1914 - 1918 with the 29th Battalion Irish Fusiliers from Vancouver.

Each year through the Royal Canadian Legion I dedicate a digital poppy to his memory, and for all those who serve and have served, but this facebook post is just to say thank you on a little broader scale.

Beware of a toothache in the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) !

One of the qualifiers for coverage under this government programme is taxable income.

A client made a significant withdrawal from his RRIF in 2024. Lo and behold, he advised me that he was denied dental benefits under the CDCP in 2025, due to his elevated taxable income.

Making increased early RRIF withdrawals is sometimes a strategy to avoid a potentially large income tax hit upon death, but be aware that this will increase your taxable income and may impact other tax-sensitive benefits.

I got a very rude reminder !

I'm a responsible dog-owner and, yes, I carry and use clean-up bags. Apparently some dog-owners don't.

One minute, there I was, stamping my right foot forward to throw Sheba's frisbee, and the next minute lying flat on my back, due to my not seeing some other dog-owner's inattention to detail. My right leg was over-extended and Bang, there went my right hamstring.

I didn't know something that could happen so fast, and could be over so quickly, could hurt so much and have the pain last so long. That was 3 weeks ago and things are improving but I'm not back yet.

What if that had been a car accident? What if that had been a heart attack?

The point of this is that I'm an insurance guy. I'm constantly reminding people that insurance needs to be there before something happens. We don't have the luxury of timing our accidents or illnesses; they happen whether we're ready or not, and usually when it's most unexpected. If you need insurance, and you haven't got it, tough luck!

I'm lucky this became funny but it might not have been. If you're not ready, I'm here to help.

Today is October 31st. It's Hallowe'en.

It also may be the day the Toronto Blue Jays win their first baseball World Series crown since 1993, but more importantly, it's my assistant Nickie Pearce's 20th anniversary working here ! How the time flies.

You all know the respect we hold for Nickie and all that she has done for our clients over the last 20 years as an integral part of this practice. It would not be the same today without her input.

We wish her a very happy and rewarding day and look forward to sharing her continuing success.
