Starting July 1, 2026, Death & Funeral Benefits under Ontario auto insurance will become fully optional coverage.

What does this mean?
These benefits can help provide financial support to loved ones if someone covered under your policy passes away as the result of an auto accident.

· Death benefits may provide financial support to eligible family members or dependents,
· Funeral benefits may help cover funeral expenses.

Before July 1, 2026, these benefits were automatically included in standard accident benefits coverage. After this date, consumers will need to choose whether they want to include this coverage on their policy.

Coverage options include:
· Death benefits for spouses, dependents, and eligible family members
· Funeral expense coverage up to limits of $6,000 or $8,000

As auto insurance coverage changes, it’s important to review your options and make sure your policy still fits your needs.

Who’s covered under the new changes?

With Ontario’s auto insurance reforms, there’s an update to who is covered under optional accident benefits — effective July 1, 2026.🚗

While existing policies will renew with the same coverage and limits, these benefits will apply only to:

· The named insured
· The spouse of the named insured
· Dependants of the named insured and of the named insured’s spouse
· Persons specified in the policy as drivers of the automobile
