Today is the big day and the forecast looks very promising for a great hike!! We have different levels of abilities from quick as bunnies to slow as turtles (aka me)!! Hope to see lots of people there!!

HIKE TO SQUIRREL MOUNTAIN (GRAND ÉTANG, CAPE BRETON):

If you would like to see an incredible view, please join us at the "Grand Opening of Squirrel Mountain" on Saturday, August 15th, 2026. We will leave from the trailhead at 9:30am. The directions to the trailhead are pinned at the top of this page. The plan is to hike the trail and then the grand opening will be when we get back (around 12:30) . We cannot judge your abilities. It is NOT an EASY hike but it is much easier now that a new trail has been cut. The first one kilometre is quite steep (it follows the same route as it did before). The next 1.5 kilometres, you will walk along a brook. We advise hiking poles, hiking boots and water!! All are invited, even if you are not a hiker (you can come and enjoy a hotdog)!

For those that do not know the location of Squirrel Mountain, it is in Grand Etang. When heading north, you will take Carding Mill Road that is at the curve (after you have passed the LeMoyne Co-op). You will follow this road along the lake (this lake will be on your left). You will pass a few gravel pits to your right and a scale to your left. The trailhead is just before the sign saying "private property OR do not enter". There is a sign saying Squirrel Mountain at the trailhead (you will park just before the trailhead -there is a small parking lot). PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON THE ROAD AS THERE ARE BIG TRUCKS HAULING OUT BIG ROCKS! You will walk 1km from the trailhead and if you want to go via the "easier route", you will follow the temporary signs (the first one is to the left). There are several temporary signs along the way. There are two views. One is where the chair is and the other looks north at the mountains and you will get a clearer view of the Cheticamp area. The new trail has been carved out by volunteers! Please (as always) do not leave any garbage along the trail!
