What made Canada worth coming to in the first place?

Jonathan Wellum says it wasn't luck β€” it was the values, principles, and free markets that Western countries built and defended over generations. The wealth that came from that is real, earned, and worth protecting.

The argument that we should dismantle it out of guilt β€” redistributing rather than inspiring others to build the same β€” isn't compassion. Jonathan calls it what it is: a suicidal tendency that's killing off the very thing that made this country great.

"It's not just bad policy. It's immoral."

Jonathan Wellum doesn't mince words on Canada's housing crisis and government priorities.

When a government chooses to hand out money it doesn't have β€” while its own citizens struggle to afford a home β€” that's not a policy disagreement. That's an abdication of the most basic responsibility of government.

The people who built this country came with nothing. They worked. They earned. They created wealth the old-fashioned way.

That standard hasn't changed. The government's commitment to it has.

When AI is the only story the market wants to tell, principled investors are doing the math everyone else is skipping.

Jonathan Wellum joined tastylive to make the case that the AI spending boom β€” the hundreds of billions flowing into data centers, chips, and infrastructure β€” cannot generate the returns required to justify current valuations.

Not anti-AI. Not anti-innovation. A CFA-grounded look at the gap between what's being spent and what can realistically come back.

A few of the threads he pulls on:

β†’ Why scale of capex doesn't translate linearly to scale of returns
β†’ How price-to-future-cash-flow assumptions are being stretched
β†’ What valuation-disciplined investing looks like when capital is this concentrated in a single narrative
β†’ The historical pattern of past capital cycles β€” and what they suggest about how this one resolves

Two consecutive quarters of negative GDP. Business investment back below 2015 levels. Over a trillion dollars in net capital outflow over the last decade.

And CBC still won't call it a recession.

Jonathan Wellum joined Marc Patrone on News Talk Sauga 960 for a sharp, unvarnished conversation on what's actually happening to the Canadian economy β€” and why the official narrative is unrecognizable from the data.

A direct, CFA-grounded take on:

β†’ Why Canada is in recession by any honest definition β€” and what "technical" framing leaves out
β†’ The $1 trillion in net investment outflow over the last decade β€” and what it says about Canadian competitiveness
β†’ How tax policy, regulation, and capital flight have widened the GDP-per-capita gap with the U.S.
β†’ The moral question behind spending public dollars on asylum-claimant housing while Canadians face their own housing crisis

Apple is the world's most valuable company β€” but does it have an AI problem?

Competitors are racing ahead with AI-first strategies. Apple is playing catch-up. If you own tech, this matters. πŸ‘‡

"They hate our country." Strong words β€” but when policy after policy works against Canadian families, at what point do you start asking the hard question?

Whose interests are actually being served? πŸ‘‡

The government wants to electrify everything. Great idea β€” but who's building the grid to support it?

Mandates are outpacing infrastructure. Costs are climbing. And Canadians are stuck with the bill.

Energy policy should be built on engineering and economics β€” not political timelines. πŸ‘‡

Germany scaled back. The UK delayed. The EU softened. The costs of aggressive green mandates were too high.

But in Canada? The government is doubling down β€” and you're paying the price.

When most of the world is pivoting, why is Canada going the other direction? πŸ‘‡
