Despite signs of economic weakness, there are some encouraging signals. Canada’s labour market showed unexpected strength in May, adding 88,000 jobs and bringing the unemployment rate down from 6.9% to 6.6%. This suggests underlying resilience, even as broader economic growth slows.

Inflation pressures remain mixed. Headline inflation rose to 2.8% in April, largely driven by higher gas prices linked to geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict in Iran. However, core inflation—closely monitored by the Bank of Canada and excluding volatile components like energy—came in lower than expected, indicating easing underlying price pressures.

Looking ahead, the Bank of Canada’s next interest rate decision is scheduled for July 15, 2026.
