Labour Day weekend often marks the unofficial end of summer for many, as kids head back to school and life shifts into a new rhythm. For some, it means soaking up a few more days on the water.

It’s also a day that recognizes the contributions of workers and the history of the labour movement. Today, it feels especially relevant as many navigate evolving industries, a rising cost of living, and a growing desire to find meaning in their work.

As we transition into a new month, it’s good to take some time to reflect on where you are today and where you want more flexibility, stability, or intention moving forward.

There are many reasons I carry such pride for my work, and one of the most significant is our all-women advisory team.

This group of resilient, brilliant, and hard-working women, whom I’m so grateful to work alongside, has made our space one of empowerment for all those we work with.

The energy, consideration, and care that Tammy, Cat, Katharine and Nadine bring to every interaction is apparent. It’s also a beautiful example of the environment women can cultivate when we work together with intentionality and purpose.

I’ve always believed there is enough space for all women around me to succeed. And when it comes down to it, when one woman succeeds, we all do.

To me, wealth means leading a fulfilling life where I get to help others.

Something near and dear to my heart is The Darling Home for Kids, where I serve on the board and development committee. As the only place of its kind in Canada, Darling Home provides a continuum of care in respite, residential and hospice palliative services to children with complex medical needs and their families.

The fact that I get to play a part in supporting this cause makes me feel incredibly lucky. Darling Home for Kids was recently featured on CTV News!

It's safe to say we're all well aware that the cost of everyday life has increased. But just by how much?

No less than 30 years ago, homes in Canada were often priced at two to four times a household's annual income. Today, in many markets, that figure is closer to six to ten times.

Home prices have far outpaced income growth. In 1996, Ontario's minimum wage was $6.85 per hour. Today, it's $17.60.

On paper, yes, wages have increased. But the gap between income and the cost of essential goods and services has widened in a way that many people feel every day. It's not always easy to grasp the scale of that shift until the numbers are placed side by side.

This shift shows up in housing decisions, in whether families can save or are simply trying to keep up, and in delayed milestones like buying a home, starting a family, or retiring.

What's important to remember is that inflation isn't just about prices rising, but also about purchasing power changing over time.

And that's why financial planning today looks significantly different than it did 20 or 30 years ago. Because the goal is no longer to just grow your money, but to ensure your money grows faster than the cost of living for long enough to make a meaningful difference.

We often think about our lives in chapters based on big milestones.

Getting married, becoming a parent, buying a home, our 40th, 50th, or 60th birthdays, followed by retirement. But amongst all of those milestones and all the moments in between, what does the quality of our lives really look like?

Our longevity in life is directly linked to the number of years we’re active, independent and mentally sharp. Our daily habits, like movement, sleep, nutrition, stress management, and regular social interactions, are strong predictors of the quality of our lives as we age.

Ensuring proper health is also a financial consideration, as the most forward-thinking financial planning conversations are starting to address questions like “How long will your health last alongside your finances?”

A balanced portfolio isn’t the only form of balance I like speaking about.

For me, my days look like a mix of helping others, where I work with families and design roadmaps for life’s transitions, and doing the things that fuel my soul so I can continue giving energy and time to those around me.

Life is all about having the right balance, and when it comes to the things that bring me joy, especially during this time of year, cycling and trying new recipes are at the top of my list. I find that these activities, often paired with listening to a good audiobook, bring a sense of calm amid the hectic pace of life.

Making space and time for what fills our own cups allows an overflow for all those around us, which I see in the work I do, in the way I engage with others, and in my ability to show up for those who need it.
