Vulnerable Persons Registry Credited with Rapid Safe Return of Youth
The Brantford Police Service is highlighting the vital role of the Vulnerable Persons Registry (VPR) following the successful recovery and safe return of an 11-year-old child early Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at approximately 6:56 a.m., officers responded to the area of Wayne Gretzky Parkway and Grey Street following reports of a young girl running without shoes toward the parkway. Officers arrived on the scene within one minute and located the child, who appeared to be non-verbal and unable to communicate her identity or home address.
In coordination with the Communications Team, responding officers utilized the Vulnerable Persons Registry. Through the database, they were able to quickly identify the 11-year-old child and locate her residence on Grey Street. Despite the child having traveled a significant distance from her home, the information provided by the VPR allowed officers to return her safely to her family within minutes of the initial call.
This incident is a prime example of how proactive registration can save lives. Without the registry, determining the identity and residence of a non-verbal individual can be a lengthy process. In this case, the VPR provided the 'missing link' that allowed us to resolve a high-risk situation almost immediately.
About the Vulnerable Persons Registry (VPR) The VPR is a voluntary, confidential database that provides first responders with essential information during an emergency. It is designed for community members with medical, cognitive, or mental health conditions—such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dementia, or Acquired Brain Injuries—that may affect their communication or social responses.
The registry allows officers to access vital details, such as emergency contacts and preferred methods of approach, before they even arrive on the scene.
How to Register Brantford residents are encouraged to register family members who may benefit from this service. Registration is free and can be completed through the Brantford Police Service website. To ensure information remains accurate, the service recommends that profiles be updated annually or whenever there is a change in address or medical status.
