In July 2026, police in Winnipeg took a 27-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman from Scarborough into custody in connection with an investigation into distraction thefts.
The investigation continued in conjunction with Windsor Police Service, where investigators in that area recovered a significant quantity of jewelry while executing a search warrant at an address.
Investigators discovered the pair had travelled across the country, carrying out thefts in various locations.
Police determined the suspects had been in Barrie in late June and matched the suspects’ and vehicle descriptions with a distractionAll Posts theft reported on June 28 at an address on Lay Street.
The victim, a 75-year-old man, was standing in his driveway when a late-model, dark coloured SUV pulled up with a male driver and a female passenger.
The passenger, described as having gold teeth, engaged in a brief conversation with the senior.
During the interaction, she offered him a necklace and as she placed it around his neck, she stole the gold necklace he had been wearing, which had his wedding ring attached.
The victim didn’t realize the theft had occurred until the suspects had driven away.
The stolen necklace and wedding ring were located among the recovered jewelry.
