Important Changes to the Super Visa Insurance Requirements

Planning to have your parents or grandparents visit you in Canada for an extended stay? There have been some important changes to the insurance requirements to enter Canada on a Super Visa or to apply for one.

If you don't have the proper insurance to meet the medical insurance requirements, your Super Visa application could be denied.

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship has issued new instructions as of July 2022.

If the insured is not yet in Canada or is in the process of applying for a visa, they will have to pay up their policy for the full one year term. Insurance must be paid in full (quotes and payments in installments are not accepted). The insurance advisor may complete the payment in full on the system by changing dates to pay for 12 months. Call your insurance advisor to make the necessary changes. Not having proper insurance could result in the denial of your Super Visa application.

The Super Visa holder will require proof of private medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company valid for a minimum period of 1 year from the date of entry. The private medical insurance must:

* be purchased from a Canadian insurance company
* be paid in full (quotes and payments in installments are not accepted)
* cover the applicant for health care, hospitalization and repatriation
* provide a minimum of $100,000 emergency coverage
* be valid for each entry to Canada and available for review by the border services officer (BSO) upon request

These ministerial instructions were issued in accordance with the ministerial authority found in subsection 15(4) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and take effect on July 4, 2022. The link to the Canadian government website setting out the new rules for Super Visa applications is set out below. The rules were updated on July 27, 2022.
