Now decommissioned, the Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) serves as a powerful monument to the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. Positioned alongside the Highway of Heroes in Bowmanville at the mouth of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), the monument and Garden of Remembrance honours the 158 members of the Canadian Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of Canada, including
Private Darryl James Caswell, a native of Bowmanville remembered for his loyalty and love of Canada. The Highway of Heroes Durham LAV Monument stands in their memory along this historical route, recalling their service and the powerful outpouring of support from the communities of the Region of Durham on the bridges and overpasses, who stood for the families of the fallen as they made a final journey home. Thanks to the dedicated work of the Highway of Heroes Durham LAV Committee, our registered charity Wounded Warriors Canada, the generous donors who made the project possible through financial and in-kind donations, as well as a collaborative, grass-roots fundraising initiative, the monument site was officially unveiled on September 24, 2016 and coincided with the arrival of the Wounded Warriors Highway of Heroes Bike Ride, riding in support of those living with operational stress injuries like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In attendance were Major General David Fraser, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, John McKay, Hon. Erin O'Toole, Member of Parliament for Durham; Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and CEO of the Region of Durham; Adrian Foster, Mayor of the Municipality of Clarington; Dave Ryan, Mayor of the City of Pickering, as well as many other dignitaries and community members. An official dedication of this important site will be held at 4:00pm on August 19th, 2017 at Clarington Fields. Please join community members and dignitaries as we mark the opening of this special place. The ceremony will coincide with the arrival of the Wounded Warriors Highway of Heroes Bike Ride, a poignant reminder of the continuing need to remember to support those who served Canada and their families.
