On Monday I was able to enjoy some of our last days of beautiful summer at the River Bend Golf Club for the Red Deer District Chamber

What a beautiful day to be outside. At the hole we served mini cheesecakes from Daylight Delights

Not so much as a safety post today but rather a be prepared post!
We had a run in with a skunk this past Thursday. Unfortunately my dog attacked it and got sprayed as defence. I had NOTHING!! Thankfully my neighbour was also outside and gave me an enzyme spray and some dawn dishsoap to get the spray out. Here are some tips that I’ve learned:

1) always best to have your vaccines up to date as skunks can be carriers of both rabies and distemper (if your dog has previously been vaccinated but they expired, usually a booster is still acceptable but check your local laws!)

2) DO NOT GET YOUR DOG WET! This will solidify the smell

3) Keep them outside and immediately wash them with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap

1 quart (4 cups) of fresh 3% hydrogen peroxide1/4 cup of baking soda1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid dishwashing soap

Wash Your Dog
Rub the mix into your dog's dry fur.
Keep it away from their eyes and mouth.
Wait 5 minutes so the ingredients break down the bad smell.
Rinse well with lots of warm water.
Wash again with regular dog shampoo if the smell is still there.

NOTE: have plastic gloves on hand for emergencies but you definitely want them on before you touch your dog!!

4) Call a vet if your dog was bitten, seems very weak, or has hurt eyes. Ours definitely had some scratches and we got him checked out the following day. Also, check their eyes for redness or swelling. Flush their eyes with cool water or saline solution if they got sprayed in the face.

5) Use and enzyme spray like Deskunk or Ez-clean BioEnzyme. Both can safely be used on your dog, your yard/deck and inside on your furniture / carpet / mats.

Our poor dog has had at least 12 baths and been soaked several times with the enzyme sprays. Unfortunately I didn’t get close enough to the skin the first night. And, when they heat up, the smell comes right back!!

I’ve heard tomato juice does not help at all so don’t waste your time. Have some of these on hand just in case…

Also, my poor pup was also traumatized as he was attacked and injured back so making sure he felt safe was important.

Lots of talk again lately about cancer. This is a great quick video to talk about three things that you can do today to get your body in the state where it is more cancer resistant. I hope this helps. Have a beautiful day.
