Last week's blowout U.S. payroll report underlined the improvement in the U.S. labour market this year, with hiring accelerating and broadening across sectors, signaling a more durable foundation for growth. Canadian employment data were also surprisingly strong, reversing some of the weakness in hiring this year.

A Weekend That Turned Into a Little Getaway

What started as a dance competition weekend in Blue Mountain turned into a pretty special mini getaway for the whole family.

We watched Zoey take the stage, earn ribbons, and bring home a trophy, which made it all the more memorable. But in between, we took full advantage of being there. Exploring the village, riding the gondola, and fitting in a few great meals along the way.

We made it a weekend we won’t forget anytime soon. Especially some bonding time with the other families and kids that Zoey dances with each and every week.

The only downside? Zoey made it very clear she wasn’t ready to leave when it was time to head home.

That’s usually a pretty good sign the trip was worth it.

One of the most common questions about Old Age Security (OAS) is when to start taking it. The standard age is 65, but you can delay until age 70. Each choice affects how much you receive.

Starting at 65 means you begin receiving income earlier. But if you delay, your monthly payments increase by 0.6% for each month you wait, up to a maximum 36% increase at age 70.

So which option is right for you? It depends on several factors unique to your situation. Your current tax rate matters. If you're still working or have other significant income, delaying might make sense. Your total income matters too, because OAS is subject to a clawback if your income exceeds certain thresholds.

If you're approaching 65 and wondering when to start your OAS, reach out. I can help you evaluate your options based on your personal circumstances.

You asked – we answered! Here are the top 10 questions about Old Age Security (OAS)

Where It Starts...

I got out for my first round of golf with Zoey while we were in Blue Mountain. We found a great little par 3 course that made it easy for her to get some swings in and for me to work on my short game.

The main objective was fun, not competition. Just a few holes, some laughs, and a chance to try something new together (she officially hates the water and losing balls as much as I do).

That first round, first swing, first experience that quietly builds into something bigger over time.

That’s how passions start. That’s how habits form. And often, that’s what your future self ends up being most grateful for.

Getting started isn't about being perfect from the start, it's about making it happen.

Before you commit to helping your child financially with a home purchase, it's worth understanding how this decision might ripple through the rest of your financial picture.

1. Your retirement and savings: Large gifts or loans can influence your long-term savings or retirement goals. If you need to liquidate investments to provide a gift, there could be tax consequences you'll want to plan for.

2. Your credit and borrowing capacity: Co-signing affects your own credit and borrowing ability. It shows up on your credit report and could limit what you can access for your own needs or to help other children down the road.

3. Fairness across your family: If you have multiple children or a blended family, you'll also want to think through fairness considerations. How will you ensure equal treatment over time? What happens if you pass away before you're able to help all your children equally?

4. Documentation and protection: Regardless of which approach you take, clear documentation helps avoid family misunderstandings later. This is especially important if you're loaning money or if there's any possibility of a relationship breakdown in your child's future.

If you're considering helping your child buy a home, reach out. I can help you understand the full financial impact and help make sure this decision supports rather than compromises your own future.

Here’s what to consider

Hard Work Shows Up Over Time

This past weekend, Zoey earned multiple awards, including 2nd overall for her ballet dance routine at her regional dance competition in Blue Mountain.

Behind moments like this aren’t shortcuts or quick wins. It’s consistency. Practice. Showing up week after week, not just for herself, but also for her team.

The same principle applies far beyond the stage. Whether it’s building a skill, a career, or making progress toward long‑term financial goals, the results we see are usually just the visible outcome of quiet, steady effort over time.

Progress isn’t always instant, but it adds up.

Proud dad moment.

Frank Fridays

Those who know me well know I’ve taken a lot from Gary Vee’s perspective over the years. Especially the idea that success isn’t scarce. There’s room for people to win without someone else losing.

I was reminded of that again in a recent conversation with another advisor. We talked about just how much opportunity exists in this industry. There are so many individuals and families out there, all at different stages, with different goals, concerns, and values. No one advisor is meant to serve everyone. Understanding that is not a weakness, it’s a strength.

When the focus stays on doing the right work, for the right types of families, and serving them the best that you can, everyone benefits.

I invite you to think about this heading into the weekend. Are you feeling like your industry is abundant or do you think your success will mean someone else will be losing?

Closing One Season, Looking Ahead to the Next

As the dance season starts to wind down, moments like this feel worth pausing for.

Between competitions wrapping up, a few days away in Blue Mountain this week, and the final recital coming up in June, it feels like a natural transition point. One chapter closing, another just around the corner.

This photo pretty much sums it up…confidence, personality, and a little bit of attitude all wrapped into one costume and one very memorable “sassy face.”

It’s been fun watching the growth over the season, not just in performance, but in showing up as yourself.

Seasons change quickly. Taking a moment to appreciate where you are before moving on to what’s next matters. I’ve also tried to take a moment to reflect on these things throughout the various milestones in my personal life and in my practice.

If you ever find yourself at a transition point and want to talk through what the next season could look like, I’m happy to have a conversation about your goals and your situation.
