Some parking changes coming in front of Prairie Insurance Brokers this summer.
Downtown Parking Changes Are Coming This Summer
To improve safety and visibility for everyone using our downtown streets, the Town of Altona will be converting the 90-degree parking on 2nd St NE to 45-degree angled parking.
Why the change?
-Better visibility for drivers when leaving parking spaces.
- Improved sightlines for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Reduced vehicle movement across traffic lanes, creating a safer downtown for everyone.
What does this mean?
There will be fewer on-street parking spaces on 2nd St NE to accommodate the new parking layout. However, more than 350 public parking spaces will still be available within 500 feet of the mall's east entrance, including both on-street and off-street parking options.
Drivers will have to park on the right-hand side of the road, based on the direction they are driving. This means some drivers may need to go around the block to reach a space on the other side. This design helps improve safety by reducing the need to cross traffic.
With the current 90-degree parking stalls, drivers should already enter and leave spaces by moving into their own lane, without crossing the centre line. That is difficult to do with 90-degree stalls, and angled parking will make it easier and more convenient.
