At the very least, small businesses should have the following protocols in place:

• Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is enabled for all remote access to the network, including all Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connections.
• Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is enabled for all email accounts.
• MFA is enforced for all privileged / administrator accounts, both local and remote.
• Critical security patches and updates are applied promptly; no end-of-life or unsupported software is in use.
• All endpoints (desktops, laptops, servers) are protected with anti-virus, anti-malware, or endpoint detection software.
• Remote access to the network is only permitted via a VPN or equivalent secure connection.
• Incoming emails are scanned for malicious attachments and links.
• A firewall is in place at the network perimeter.
• User access rights are restricted to the minimum necessary for each role (principle of least privilege).
• Security awareness training is provided to all employees at least annually.

Did you know that auto insurance in Alberta is changing. This is one of the latest changes we have learned:

Drivers could lose rate protection under the adjusted rate cap if:

a new at-fault accident
a new driving conviction
adding a driver or changing vehicles
adjusting your coverage

Reforming Alberta’s auto insurance system so it is more affordable and stable for drivers and insurers now and in the future.

here's what is staying the same in the new upcoming auto insurance program:

Physical damage coverages (Collision, DCPD, Comprehensive) remain structurally unchanged under Care-first. Pricing continues to reflect inflation, repair complexity, theft, weather and tariffs.

Adverse Contractual Action provisions and the Take-All-Comers rule remain in place.

The Good Driver Rate Cap remains at 7.5% for 2026.

So far, here's what we know about the upcoming auto insurance changes:

Accident benefit coverage changes:

Medical and rehabilitation is now $50,000 / 2 years and will go up to unlimited / potentially for life
Permanent impairment - None (tort only) goes Up to $298,520 (catastrophic claims)
Personal care is now Within $50K limit only will go Up to $6,781/month (catastrophic claims)
Income replacement is currently $31,200/year / 2 years goes to 90% net income up to $125,000/year until age 65
Death - funeral is now Up to $6,150 will go Up to $10,308
Death - spouse is now $10K–$25K will go up to $75,623–$600,000
Grief counselling is now $500 per family will go up to $4,310 per person

Auto insurance - commercial and personal just changed with one of our companies. For Hail, in high hail claim areas, they are imposing a $1000 deductible minimum for hail claims. Policies (not necessarily vehicles) with 2+ hail claims in the past 3 years no longer qualify for hail coverage. This is just one tactic one of our cheaper insurance companies is taking to remain one of the cheaper in Alberta ...

Alberta Auto insurance is changing!

Alberta is removing its 22-year-old auto insurance 'grid' rating system, which caps premiums for high-risk drivers, as of Jan. 1, 2027.

Good Driver update
Under the revised Good Driver criteria, eligibility for the 7.5% cap requires that drivers have no:

at-fault claims in the previous six years
criminal code convictions in the previous four years
major convictions in the previous three years
minor convictions in the previous three years.
