Kathe came to me after winning a PocketHelpersyyc contest. She was new to Canada and felt overwhelmed by money. High-interest car loan, credit cards she didn’t fully understand, and no idea how the credit system worked here.

She booked a 1-on-1 session with one goal: become financially stable and eventually buy a home.

3 ways I make extra money outside my 9-to-5 — no second job required:

💰 Dividends (TFSA): My ETFs pay me quarterly or semi-annually just for holding. Right now reinvesting 100% — but one day this becomes tax-free passive income. Long game. 🌱

🏠 Rental income: Real estate that pays me monthly while it appreciates.

💳 Wealthsimple card: 2% cashback on everything. Small, but adds up fast.

⭐ My favourite hack? Paying insurance-covered expenses with my cashback card before submitting for reimbursement.
Today: 90-min massage, 100% covered by my wife’s benefits. Paid with my Wealthsimple card, submitted the receipt, get fully reimbursed. Result? Got paid to relax. 🧘

❌ “Keep cash — banks can’t be trusted”
✅ Canadian banks are CDIC insured up to $100K per deposit category. That means you can actually have more than $100K protected at the same bank — across different categories like savings, TFSA, RRSP, and more. And cash sitting still quietly loses value to inflation.

❌ “Avoid credit — debt is dangerous”
✅ In Canada, no credit history means no apartment, no car loan, no mortgage. Building credit responsibly is part of the game here.

❌ “Investing is only for rich people”
✅ You can start with $1. And inside a TFSA, your money grows completely tax-free.
Your parents weren’t wrong for where they came from. But learning Canada’s financial rules is one of the most powerful things you can do when you arrive.💡

What if your investments paid you — without selling anything? That’s exactly what a dividend is💰

When you own shares in a company, you own a small piece of it. If that company is profitable and chooses to pay dividends, you receive a cash payment just for holding the stock. No selling required 💡

Simple example:

→ You own 100 shares
→ Dividend: $0.50/share per quarter
→ You receive $50 every 3 months = $200/year 💵

And here’s something most beginners don’t know — 👀 ETFs pay dividends too. Many ETFs hold dozens or hundreds of dividend-paying companies and pass that income on to you automatically.

🌱And if you hold those dividend-paying investments inside your TFSA? That income is completely tax-free. That’s tax-free passive income — one of the most powerful things available to Canadians 💪

Reinvest those dividends and let compounding do the rest♻️

💰 $100,000 in 2020 now requires about $123,800 in 2026 to buy the same things.

⚠️ That’s a 23.8% increase in purchasing power needed — in just 6 years.

Meanwhile, broad market ETFs like 🇨🇦 iShares Core Equity ETF Portfolio (XEQT) or Vanguard All-Equity ETF Portfolio (VEQT) have significantly outpaced inflation over recent years 👀

That’s why many Canadians invest long-term — not to get rich quick, but to make sure their money doesn’t quietly shrink.
