Budgeting Tips
Know the suggested "maximums" of your take home pay to spend on each of your monthly expenses. Keep
your debt and credit payments at 20% or less, and try to save at least 5% of your monthly take home pay.
Blind spending
If, at the end of the month, you don't know where your money has gone, you're "spending blind". People try
to rationalise blind spending by thinking that all budgets are limiting and time consuming. Not true. Keep
simple records. A good money plan lets you have fun and needs only a minimum of record keeping. Start by
writing down every dime you spend for a month to find your spending leaks, then plan your budget to meet
your needs and lifestyle.
Never getting ahead
A lot of people are frustrated by not getting ahead, often because they haven't set and saved for financial
goals. They get a raise and spend more (instead of saving), never feeling the satisfaction of real financial
progress.
Set Financial Goals
Plan where you want to be financially in six months and tw
o years. Be sure your goals
are realistic: to save for
an emergency fund or down payment on a house, to start a retirement nest egg, or to pay off your credit
cards.
Money Crisis
Whether you're just starting out, recently retired, or somewhere in between be prepared for a money crises. A
financial crisis is nothing to be ashamed of: it can -and does -happen to people of all ages and income levels.
But if you plan ahead, a loss of income, divorce, major illness, or other crises wont put you in deep water if it
happens to you.
Loss of income
Unemployment, a cutback in hours, or uneven sales commissions strains your budget.
Plan ahead Don’t panic: you’re protected if you have a three-month emergency fund to fall back on. And
don’t be paralysed: cut your expenses to the bone, and ask creditors to accept partial payments for now.
Divorce
Divorce splits up incomes as well as hearts, and causes
turmoil if your spouse was the “accountant” in the
family.
Use your resources
Establish credit in your own name (even in a good
marriage), and compare actual
dollar costs of charge
accounts and loans.
Major illness
Hospital bills can sink you (especially if you’re an older adult living on a fixed income). Choose your coverage.
Think about your personal medical history and choose medical insurance that covers your likely illnesses.
Shop around for low cost medical care, home health agencies, and generic medications.
Help from your Company
Many companies, through an Employee Assistance
Program (EAP), Personnel Department, or Wellness
Program, now provide information and support to help employees cope with money troubles. They can help
you start a budget or put you in touch with outside agencies for help.
Credit Counsellors Consumer

counselling. They can help you start a budget and work with your creditors to set p a debt repayment plan.
