LOANS RECOVERY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q12: HOW DO I PAY MY EDUCATION LOAN?
A: Payroll system (Government employees)
-EFT or Stop Order-First National Bank account: Contact the department for arrangement
-Revenue office(DTEF):one can pay at our revenue office
-Through employers:

Q13: DO I PAY FOR MY REPEAT SPONSORSHIP?
A: YES
The costs and expenses incurred by the government during a repeat period shall be added to the student loan.

Q14: WHAT HAPPENS TO MY EDUCTION LOAN IF I AM EMPLOYED OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY?
A: If the student does not return nor seek employment with any sector of the economy in Botswana after completion or cessation of study the government shall be entitled to demand full payment of the loan and all monies expended on the student.

Q15: WHAT KIND OF EMPLOYMENT IS LIABLE FOR PAYMENT?
A: any form of employment is liable for payment, but if an individual is not employed elsewhere but has the ability to repay their loan, it is acceptable.

A: The payment period depends on the amount owed and instalments. maximum 20yrs

Q9: CAN I NEGOTIATE PAYMENT INSALMENTS ACCORDING TO MY CAPABILITY?
A: The installment is determined by the total loan to repay.

Q10: CAN I PART- PAY MY LOAN TO REDUCE IT?
A: YES

Q4: I WAS SPONSORED UNDER THE VULNERABLE AND DISADVANTAGED LEARNERS PROGRAM, DO I PAY THE LOAN?
A: YES

Q5:.DO I STILL PAY MY LOAN EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT COMPLETE MY STUDIES?
A: YES
Where the student at any time during the currency of the agreement fails or omits to fulfil any terms, conditions and /or obligations binding on him/her, the government shall claim repayment of all monies expended on the students under the agreement. The student shall reimburse the Government all costs and expenses incurred by the Government in enforcing or attempting to enforce any claim or loss resulting from breach by the student, of the agreement.

Q6: WHY IS IT THAT OUR COSTS ARE NOT THE SAME THOUGH WE DID THE SAME COURSES BUT AT DIFFERENT INSTITUTION?
A: costs vary per institution AND year of attendance. E.g. allowances, tuition etc.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS?

Q 1 . WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LOAN, A GRANT AND A SCHOLARSHIP?
- LOAN: The beneficiary is expected to pay back the capital amount
-GRANT: The beneficiary does not have to pay back any amount upon completion of studies.
-SCHOLARSHIP: an award of financial aid from donors for students to further their education, commonly on the need based type of scholarship therefore it is not eligible for recovery.

Q2. WHAT IS MY OBLIGATION TO THE GOVERNMENT AS A BENEFICIARY?
A: The obligation is to payback the government as agreed in the memorandum of agreement signed between the beneficiary and the Department on behalf of the government.

Q3: WHAT ARE THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF MY LOAN?
A: The student shall on completion or cessation of the program of study undertaken in terms of the agreement and upon obtaining employment, payback to the Government, the loan inclusive of the maintenance cost and tuition cost, and all other costs incurred and expended on his/her training.

EDUCATION LOAN RE-PAYMENT METHODS:

1.Payroll deduction:
Monthly installments are arranged to be deducted from individual payroll accounts.i.e Central Government, Local Government and private and parastatal companies.

2.Walk-ins: payments can be made at the revenue office.

3.First National Bank Botswana Account:
This was created for beneficiaries who are self-employed and have the ability to pay the loan, before making a payment, one should contact our offices to make some arrangement and confirm the loan amount.
