To gain deeper insight into the impact and performance of the Pandamatenga Grain Silos, the SEZA_Botswana PR & Communications team caught up with a representative from the Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board - BAMB for an exclusive interview.
The discussion explored key topics including storage utilisation, current grain stock levels, and the significant role the silos play in supporting Botswanaโs agricultural sector.

๐ค. What grains do you currently have in storage?
๐. We only have red sorghum for now, which remains one of Botswana's key food security and agro-processing
commodities.
๐ค. What are the current stock levels?
๐. Stock levels stand at approximately 45,948 metric tonnes of red sorghum.
๐ค. How has the uptake been?
๐. The uptake has been encouraging and consistent. BAMB has secured supply arrangements with various millers and processors, ensuring a steady movement of grain from the silos. The facility enables efficient storage and dispatch of large volumes, allowing us to meet market demand while maintaining grain quality.
๐ค. Who is your biggest market for the grains?
๐. Our major customers currently include agro-processors and millers such as Bokomo Botswana and Honey Guide, among others. These customers rely on the availability of quality grain to support their production operations and downstream value chains.
๐ค. Is the produce getting out at a normal rate, below or above average, in comparison with previous years?
๐. At present, grain movement is occurring at a generally normal rate and is aligned with prevailing market demand and contractual commitments. The storage infrastructure has enhanced our ability to respond efficiently to customer requirements and maintain reliable supply.
๐ค. Between the different grains that you often store in the silos, what has proven to be in more demand?
๐. Red sorghum is currently the most demanded grain, driven largely by demand from millers and processors who utilize it for food production and other value-added products.
๐ค. In a nutshell, how have the silos positively impacted the Pandamatenga commercial farmers since operation in 2024?
๐. The silos have had a significant positive impact on commercial farming operations in Pandamatenga by, among others:
โข Providing secure, modern, and reliable grain storage facilities close to production areas
โข Reducing post-harvest losses through proper grain handling and storage
โข Improving the efficiency of grain aggregation, handling, and distribution
โข Supporting the development of agro-processing and value addition by ensuring a stable supply of raw materials, and
โข Strengthening market confidence and contributing to the growth of the local agricultural economy.
๐ค. Are the silos of any benefit to local subsistence farmers?
๐. Yes. While the facility primarily supports commercial grain production, the broader benefits extend to local and emerging farmers through:
โข Improved market access and grain marketing opportunities.
โข Enhanced food security through the availability of strategic grain reserves.
โข Economic activity generated through grain handling, transportation, and related services.
โข The potential for future integration of smaller producers into organized grain value chains as production levels increase.
