The Botswana Export Credit Insurance & Guarantee Company (BECI) plays a critical role in unlocking business growth and enabling Botswana companies to confidently participate in regional and global trade.

Established in 1996 and wholly owned by the Botswana Development Corporation (BDC), BECI provides trade credit insurance and guarantee solutions that protect businesses against non-payment risks, turning uncertainty into opportunity.

Speaking during the ongoing BETP/SEZA workshop, BECI Business Development Associate, Ms. Karabo Tsetse, highlighted that BECI supports BETP and SEZA-driven projects by mitigating risk through protecting businesses from commercial and political non-payment risks, unlocking finance through enhancing creditworthiness and improving access to funding, as well as supporting project delivery by enabling implementation in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and infrastructure.

Furthermore, BECI assists with de-risking investment through strengthening Botswana’s value proposition for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

Ms. Tsetse also said BECI plays a key role in infrastructure development within Special Economic Zones, providing construction bonds and guarantees to ensure successful project ex*****on.

She added that BECI offers, among other services, credit insurance for local and export trade, bonds and guarantees for projects and contracts, construction and liability insurance, as well as financial guarantees to support funding and collateral requirements

"Through these solutions, businesses can protect up to 80% of receivables, access invoice financing, secure larger contracts and expand into new markets with confidence," she emphasised.

BECI remains a strategic partner in driving private sector-led growth, supporting Botswana’s ambition to unlock significant investment under the BETP and accelerate economic diversification.

The Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA), in partnership with the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) Secretariat under the Ministry of Finance, is today (Tuesday, 21 April 2026) hosting a high-impact Business Support & Opportunity Workshop for BETP Project Owners.

Hosted at the SEZA offices, this strategic engagement is designed to equip Project Owners with practical insights to scale and sustain their businesses, while deepening their understanding of Special Economic Zones (SEZs), export market facilitation, and access to financing.

SEZA will deliver a key presentation on investor licensing, SEZ land allocation processes, and the incentives available to investors. To enrich the session, other key strategic partners and potential project funders have been invited, including the Botswana Development Corporation (BDC), National Development Bank (NDB), and the Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA).

These institutions are expected to unpack their financial products and tailored support programmes, offering valuable guidance to both large enterprises and the broader value chains. Participants will also gain clarity on funding criteria and application requirements.

Further strengthening the programme, the Botswana Chamber of Mines (BCM) and Botswana Export Credit Insurance (BECI) will provide insights into export market facilitation and risk mitigation through insurance solutions.

This collaborative platform reflects a shared commitment to driving economic transformation, unlocking investment opportunities, and empowering Botswana’s business community for global competitiveness.

Under the BETP, Government has identified over 180 high-value projects, the majority of which are private sector-led. In addition, four Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are being facilitated under the Programme, being Pandamatenga, Sowa, Lobatse, and Airport City (SSKIA), further reinforcing Botswana’s strategic focus on industrial growth and investment attraction.
