🇧🇴 200 YEARS OF FREEDOM AND CHALLENGES. BOLIVIA IN ITS BICENTENNIAL
On August 6, 2025, Bolivia commemorates 200 years of independence, recalling that historic day in 1825 when the Assembly convened in Chuquisaca proclaimed the foundation of the “Republic of Bolívar”, in honor of Liberator Simón Bolívar, author of the country’s first Act of Independence and drafter of its first constitutional project. This denomination remained in effect from August 11 to October 3, 1825, succeeding the previous title of Alto Perú.
It was Simón Bolívar himself who, in a letter to Antonio José de Sucre (then President), suggested that the country be called the “Republic of Bolivia”, as a Castilianized form of his surname. The name was officially adopted by decree on October 3, 1825, just two months after the proclamation of independence.
Few recall that Bolivia was the last South American republic to formally break from Spanish rule. However, it was also the first territory to rise up, with the libertarian cry of May 25, 1809, in Chuquisaca, and the first in all of the Americas to openly declare independence on July 16, 1809, in La Paz, founding what some historians consider the first free government in the Americas, the Junta Tuitiva.
We must also remember the regional acts of heroism that shaped our national story, the resistance of the republiquetas in Santa Cruz, the defense of the Villa Imperial in Potosí, the courage of the women of Cochabamba at the Coronilla, the insurrection in Mizque, the strategic role of the Gran Chaco in Tarija, and the indigenous coordination across the highlands and valleys. Bolivia’s independence was (and still is) a collective and diverse achievement.
Two centuries later, Bolivia is a resilient, plural, and vibrant nation, still facing great challenges in justice, development, social cohesion, and democratic institutions. With a population exceeding 12 million, over 60% are under the age of 30, a youth that represents not just the future, but the very present of a country longing for renewal, equity, and peace.
From our Law Firm, we wish to honor this national milestone not only with words, but by renewing our commitment to the defense of the Rule of Law, the integrity of the Constitution, and the construction of a more just Bolivia for all.
We firmly believe that justice must not be a privilege, but a guarantee, and that true patriotism is practiced daily through ethics, legality, and truth.
The Estudio Jurídico Núñez del Prado Medina & Asociados Soc. Civ. raises its voice and proclaims:
🎉 Happy Bicentennial, Bolivia!
In memory of those who fought, in dignity for those who resist, and in hope for those who dream.
