OUR LOANS HELPING CREATE THRIVING BUSINESSES

“I am very happy for the Nile Cooperative loan that helped me to improve my leaving conditions. I am electrician. I received a loan from TNC that helped me to buy good equipment I use when making electrical repairings to earn money. Also, I invested a part of the loan in the business of selling Indagara (Small fishes from Lake Tanganyika). The benefits I made from the business and the electrical repairings helped me to buy four pigs that are growing very well and soon may multiply. I have also started building a shade for rabbits I am planning to buy soon.
My wife is the one who deals with the business of selling Ndagara while I follow up our project of pigs and rabbits.
Now, I feed well my family because my income has increased. My businesses are performing well and I am able to pay back the loan regularly. I thank a lot TNC for the loan and their coaching session they organized for me to learn how to manage well the loan” tells us Jean Berchmas (29) married and father of one child, living in Gitega province.

Microfinance offers poor people access to loans, savings and other basic financial services. People living in poverty require these types of financial services to operate their businesses and both manage and grow their assets, just like everyone else. The difference is, the poor can’t simply walk into a bank and take out a loan or open a savings account. In most cases, they have very little assets or collateral, lack credit histories and employment records, and may not even be able to read or sign their names.
For these reasons, the majority of formal financial institutions do not consider the poor to be creditworthy. Hard-working poor entrepreneurs often find themselves forced to deal with usurious money lenders and loan sharks. Microfinance – and specifically, microenterprise development or “small business development” – offers the poor an opportunity to access small amounts of loan capital and start their own businesses.
Microfinance, especially when used to build up impoverished communities, is a proven and effective strategy in combating poverty.
