What happens when an entrepreneur has the customers, the skills, and the determination to grow but lives in a country with limited access to capital?

For Didace Barandereka, a mobile money agent in Burundi, this was a daily reality. Every day, customers walked away simply because his available liquidity could not keep up with demand.

His story is not unique.

Across Burundi and many emerging markets, mobile money agents serve as the bridge between underserved communities and essential digital financial services. Yet many operate below their full potential because they lack access to affordable working capital.

Through PayVista's agent financing services, supported by the Venture Incubator, Didace was able to increase his operational capacity and serve more customers. His journey reflects a much bigger opportunity: when mobile money agents gain access to the right financial infrastructure, they can expand financial access for entire communities.

Six months ago, PayVista joined the Mastercard Foundation Fund for Alumni Start-ups in Transition (FAST) Program - Cohort 02 under the Build Stage, alongside innovative ventures from across West, North, and Central Africa.

What happens when a young entrepreneur with talent finally gets access to capital?

For Melchiade Mela Mike Jft, it meant transforming a small creative business into a growing enterprise that is now helping other young people build digital skills and create opportunities for themselves.

Starting with only basic equipment, Melchiade had the ambition and the market demand, but not the tools needed to grow.
Through a PayVista microloan of $1,680, he purchased a professional camera, improved the quality of his services, increased his income, and continued reinvesting in his business.

Today, he is not only running a successful creative studio; he is also training young people in photography, videography, Microsoft Office, and digital skills.

His story reminds us that poverty is often not a lack of talent. It is a lack of opportunity and access.

Meet Diane Ndayishimiye. After struggling to find a job in Burundi, she became a mobile money agent. Friends mocked her. But she persisted.

This achievement means a lot to us. It reflects the impact of our mission to empower mobile money agents and improve access to financial services for underserved communities across Burundi.

Through AVI, we’ll gain access to mentorship, coaching, strategic guidance, and funding that will help us strengthen our operations, accelerate our product development, and push PayVista toward sustainable growth.
