In Bulgaria, “health insurance” (медицинска застраховка / здравно осигуряване) usually refers to the system that pays for medical care.
🇧🇬 Public health insurance (mandatory)
Most residents are covered through the state system managed by the National Health Insurance Fund (Bulgaria).
If you work legally in Bulgaria, contributions are usually deducted from your salary.
It covers:
Visits to a general practitioner (GP)
Specialist referrals (with GP direction)
Hospital treatment (partially or fully covered)
Some prescriptions (partially reimbursed)
💡 Important: You usually need to be “insured” (осигурен) with paid contributions to access full benefits.
🏥 Private health insurance
Private medical insurance in Bulgaria is optional.
Used for:
Faster access to doctors
Private clinics and hospitals
English-speaking services (useful for expats)
Often comes as:
Monthly plans (~30–150+ BGN depending on coverage)
Employer-provided benefit
