Bulgaria has confirmed a rise in the annual VAT registration threshold from 1 January 2025. It will increase from the current BGN 100,000 (approx. €51,000) to BGN 166,000 (approx. €85,000).

Bulgaria estimates that 200 000 companies in Bulgaria would be exempted from mandatory VAT registration. Depending on how many companies choose to de-register, the state coffers will lose between 85 million and 130 million leva, they said.

Food and entertainment establishments must have a POS terminal. This was announced by the Ministry of Finance. The changes to the Tourism Law come into force on March 1, 2024.

In establishments with a category of two stars and more, restaurateurs and owners are obliged to provide the possibility of payment through a POS terminal device. Information about this must be placed in a place visible to customers in the relevant facility.

Those who do not comply are subject to a fine. For individuals, the penalty is from BGN 100 to BGN 500, and for sole traders and legal entities – from BGN 500 to BGN 2,000. In the event of a repeated violation, the fine is from BGN 200 to BGN 1,000, and for companies – from BGN 1,000 to BGN 4,000. If the customers are not informed that they can pay by card, the fine is from BGN 100 to BGN 300 for individuals and BGN 300 to BGN 1000 for companies. In case of repeated violation, the amount is doubled.

For half an hour from 12:00 to 12:30 a message containing text in Bulgarian and English will be broadcast

The receipt of the message on the mobile device is expected to be one-time and accompanied by a specific sound and vibration , even with silent mode enabled.

From September 1, 2023, natural persons will be able to open a payment account for basic operations, and this account will be serviced free of charge when it receives and stores funds from labor remuneration, pensions, benefits and benefits for social security and social assistance , scholarships for pupils, students and doctoral students. This opportunity was provided for citizens with changes to the Law on Payment Services and Payment Systems, voted with the adoption of the Law on the State Budget of the Republic of Bulgaria for 2023.

A condition for the use of a payment account for basic operations is that the person does not have another payment account opened in a bank through which he can use the specified payment services. Each citizen will be entitled to only one payment account for basic operations. Services such as depositing funds into the account, withdrawing cash from a counter or ATM, as well as other payment operations on the territory of the country in BGN can be performed through the account for basic operations. Citizens will be able to withdraw the specified funds from the account for basic operations free of charge only at ATMs of the servicing bank.

Mountain rescuers helped a man with an injured ankle below the "Bunderishka Porta" area in Pirin.
The rescuers thank their colleagues from the Mountain Rescue Service-Blagoevgrad for their assistance. They once again remind tourists not to underestimate the need for insurance when going out in the mountains.

The injured tourist was reported at around 10:00 yesterday morning. A team of rescuers was immediately formed , who reached the victim, splinted his injured ankle and took him down on a stretcher to be transported to a hospital .
