Every day, hundreds of large cargo ships navigate the Scheldt River to and from ports in Flanders and Zeeland. The river is curvy, with shallow spots, strong winds, and tides that can fluctuate up to six meters. The WEsterScheldtPlanner (WESP) application helps vessels navigate safely and efficiently on the river without touching the bottom.

CGI worked with Flemish and Dutch authorities to develop the application to advise port authorities and pilots on keel clearance safety for ships navigating the river. WESP uses meteorological forecasts and real-time ocean conditions to provide dynamic predictions up to 48 hours prior to sailing.

When Vicky started working in technology, women were still underrepresented. That didn’t stop her to generate successes with the same enthusiasm as when she started to work at CGI 6 years ago.

“I have worked in IT for my entire career. At the start, I was considered as the only woman present in meetings or international seminars, it was different as a woman to get included. Based on my personal experience, I would advise to build trust relationships with your customer and peers, recognize the value of networking with colleagues and management, it helps you gain access to a wide range of business contacts and opportunities.
